"So, what else has been going on? Other than the constant training. There's gotta be something."

"Uh..." I trailed off. "Not really. It's been pretty boring."

My mind drifted to the diner. Then volleyball at Vanta's party. Then coffee. Wearing a hoodie that wasn't mine.

The smell of mint.

I shook my head, pushing the images away.

"What was that?" Mia asked, her eyes widening.

"Yeah, what the heck was that?" Laney said. They were both staring at me funny.

"What are you talking about?" I asked, suddenly feeling defensive.

"That look," Laney said, pointing to my face. "I asked that question, and you looked down and smiled like an idiot."

"I did not," I said, my face heating.

"You totally did," Mia said. "So who is it? Spill. Is it some guy on the men's elite team?"

"It's gotta be," Laney said, rubbing her hands together. "Alright, spill it, Scar."

I opened my mouth to argue more, but before I could—

There was a knock at my door.

Laney's eyebrows shot up. "Are you expecting someone?”

I ignored her and pushed off the couch, padding across the creaky wood floor to the door.

Who was knocking so late?

When I pulled open the door, I felt my heart jump into my throat.

Rove stood on the other side, one hand tucked into the pocket of his hoodie. In the other, he held my grips.

"You left these after practice," he said, holding them out.

My eyes widened.

"Oh my gosh." I reached for them. “I would’ve completely forgotten them."

"I figured," he said, the corner of his mouth tugging upward. "Thought you might want them before this weekend."

Somehow my cheeks got even redder. I probably looked like a maraschino cherry at this point.

"Thank you."

His eyes drifted past me, landing on Laney and Mia peeking over the back of the couch to get a view of the front door.

"Oh." He straightened slightly. "Sorry. I didn't realize you had company."

"It's okay," I said. "These are my friends, Laney and Mia. They’re on the UCLA team. You’ve met them briefly.”

He gave them a polite nod.

"Nice to see you both again."
