Rook returns to the monitors.

“She signed the waiver.”

Ash looks up.

“She was suffocating.”

“She was resisting.”

“She was suffocating.”

Rook tilts his head. “A distinction you discovered when you needed someone else to carry the blame.”

Cade’s blood-stained forearm settles across the console between Ash and the monitors.

“You threw him out.”

“I did.”

“And kept the attraction.”

Ash stays silent. That answer matters almost as much as the first. He removed Rook. He did not destroy everything they built together. Rook changes the monitors again. The current public waiver fills them.

CRIMSON NIGHT DOES NOT RECOGNIZE PARTICIPANT SAFE WORDS.

VERBAL REFUSAL MAY BE TREATED AS PART OF THE PERFORMANCE.

He leaves the clauses there.

“You removed me,” Rook says. “Then sold the same promise with cleaner machinery behind it.”

Cade turns toward Ash. “Why?”

Ash looks at the waiver.

“Because it sold.”

Nobody answers immediately. Ash continues.

“We rebuilt the actual safeguards. Medical staff received independent authority. Performer controls were separated from emergency termination.”

The mechanisms changed. The promise customers saw did not. I step away from the console. Ash notices. His hands stay where they are.

“You still let guests walk in believing nobody would stop for them.”

“Yes.”

Rook laughs softly. “You always loved that part. The house appears merciless, and you get to congratulate yourself because mercy exists somewhere backstage.”

The chained emergency exit comes back immediately. The clean padlock. The fresh scrape across the push bar. I did not know whether that was part of Crimson Night because the entire experience depends on making the participant unsure where performance ends. Rook understands that weakness because he helped build it. Owen turns from the diagnostic screen.

“The exit Salem found was clear two weeks ago. I checked the inspection records after she flagged it.”

Cade looks toward Rook. “He chained it.”

“The old service spine reaches the wall behind that entrance,” Owen says. “He could have installed the chain without crossing the public route.”

Rook stays silent. That confirms enough. Tonight’s danger keeps hiding inside Crimson Night because every real violation looks almost identical to something Decay Brigade might have designed themselves. I look at Ash.
