“And?” he cut in. “You think my wolf is suddenly going to be able to throw magic bolts of lightning out of his eyes? Or freeze the ground when he walks?”

“Not exactly.” I tilted my head, conceding. “But I am curious. We’ve seen Sloane shift, though not much. That makes me wonder what her wolf can do.”

“Shifters don’t work like that.”

I huffed. “Says who?”

“The universe?” he replied sarcastically.

“Have you tried?”

“Well, no.” He shrugged. “Why would I?”

I squinted at him, shaking my head. “Because you’re mated to a fucking goddess with unlimited power at her disposal?”

“When you put it like that…”

“Just humor me for a minute.”

“Okay,” he commented, but I could hear his curiosity.

“If Sloane’s ability is to mimic, and some of us have already felt that through our bonds, then what’s to say we can’t at least mimic each other’s powers?”

Briggs chuckled. “Are you going to shift?”

“I have no idea how that works,” I confessed.

“Exactly,” he responded. “It’s not a gift I imagine being passed along like fire... But even that’s different from sprouting wings and horns.”

I nodded along with his train of thought. “So you’re saying you think some things can be shared, but not all?”

“Yes. That’s what I’m saying.”

“We need to narrow down that selection.”

He bit at his bottom lip, not following me. “What?”

“Can any of us shift?” I asked. “If anyone could, it would be Stone. Maybe Vaughn... They already have different forms. It would also make sense that the fae can mix powers with the demon. Those two species are similar enough.”

“What about you or me?” he inquired, taunting me more than helping me.

“I don’t know,” I rushed out, tapping my fingers on the arm of the chair. “Shifters don’t generally have extra abilities, though it’s not unheard of. But enhanced speed or strength could be something to test. Mages are different. We’re closer to elementals in some ways, humans in other ways. So, it wouldn’t be too far-fetched to say that I could potentially use York’s or even Vaughn’s powers.”

“It would make more sense to me if Vaughn could use York’s power,” he muttered, narrowing his eyes at me.

I jumped up to pace through my thoughts. “Right? That’s what I’m saying... Even if we can’t really tap into them enough to fight with, it’s still something to play with for future problems.”

“You expect many problems of this magnitude in the future?”

“Have you met our mate?” I countered, pausing my steps to raise a brow at him.

He held his hands up. “Fair.”

“Let’s say we can’t tap into each other’s powers enough to fight with them…” I continued walking the length of the porch, getting faster as my thoughts sped up. “What then?”

Briggs was silent for a minute, so I answered my own question.

“We need to test our own skills.”
