Vaughn snorted. “One of your mates is an angel, Frey. You can hardly point fingers.”

“What if she eats you?” Freya whispered urgently.

He grinned. “That’s not usually how it works.”

“Gods, Vaughn.”

“What?” he replied, humor thick in his voice. “Demons don’t really eat people, not to my knowledge, anyway. And Lo is a vegetarian. Her wolf doesn’t even eat meat, which is weird, but I’m beyond asking those kinds of questions.”

“I don’t even know where to begin,” she muttered.

“Neither did we,” Briggs told her.

Vaughn pointed at the wolf. “He started with fighting her. She did bite him.”

“So, I take it you’re doing well down here?” I glanced around the cell. “Nice, comfy beds? Hot meals?”

“It’s a little stuffy,” he casually complained. “I wouldn’t be so bad if the windows opened.”

“It’s fucking disgusting,” Freya spat. “I want out of here, but Vaughn says we can’t leave yet, even though he absolutely, without a doubt, can get us out.”

“Status report?” I asked, giving Freya a sympathetic smile.

I knew it sucked. There was nothing I could say or do right now to make it any better. She would be out sooner than she realized, though. And then she would get to meet two new mates. I had no doubts she would adore Levi… But Zyus? I wasn’t a fan of his.

Vaughn shrugged. “We found Nate and Amelia. They’re fine, ready to leave, but alive. You?”

“Tilly gave us a lovely warning,” Briggs mentioned.

“About?”

“The queen is losing it.”

Freya leaned against the wall, frowning before she corrected her posture. “She is. She locked me in here because I told Tilly she could leave breakfast before the lying bitch made it to the table. Or that’s what she said.”

I wobbled my head, unsure of how to broach the topic. “Tilly is—”

“Not shy like you said,” Briggs finished for me. “She was pretty bitchy to Sloane, but she took it because Tilly is your sister. I don’t know what that’s about, but we’re worried she won’t be as open-minded about the truths we’ve got to exploit.”

“Sloane knows her reputation,” Vaughn informed us, as if we didn’t already know. “She’s not blind. Just because we know her better doesn’t mean everyone else wants to try. I’ll talk to Tilly when we leave.”

“When we leave.” Freya snorted. “Like we’re just going to walk out of here and not be stopped.”

Vaughn gave her a bored look. “We will. No one will stop us.”

“What the fuck is going on with him?” she asked us. “He’s acting weirder than normal.”

I scrubbed my hand over my head. “We’ve all been through a lot in the last couple of weeks.”

“Yes, and?”

“And Vaughn has changed more than most of us.”

His icy eyes lit up with amusement. “She doesn’t believe that we’re not worried about Alania.”

“Oh, we’re not.” Briggs agreed. “She’s a problem, but nothing to concern yourself with.”

“Why?” she whispered.
