I laughed at him. “They’re gnarly,” I promised, “and kinda gross. They aren’t like Stone’s wings. I’ve grown to like them, but it took me learning to use them to appreciate them.”

“I bet they’re beautiful,” Novak told me, pulling me against his body.

“They’re just bones, Novak,” I admitted in confusion.

He grinned mischievously at me. “I have a bone.” He raised a brow when I giggled at him. “And that’s my mom's house.” He pointed to the house we were standing in front of. Leaning his head down, he kissed me. Not a simple, chaste kiss either. No. Novak’s right hand pushed between my head and the tie holding my hair up. His left hand worked its way from my waist down to the top of my thigh, using that grip to lift me up. I wrapped my legs around him, hanging my arms over his shoulders.

Right there, in the middle of town, in front of his mother’s home, he kissed me like a vampire dying of thirst. The way he scooped me up with one hand reminded me of just how strong he actually was. I wanted so much more, and I didn’t care who saw. He knew it, too. As soon as the thought crossed my mind, the jackass grinned against my lips and unwound my legs from his lean hips. I bit my lower lip, sulking. “Tease.”

“Nope.” He slapped my ass for the second time today. “Let’s go inside, Trouble.”

Novak grabbed my hand again, pulling me excitedly behind him. It was adorable, but I was feeling a little nervous about meeting his mom. He didn’t stop to knock on the door, or even listen to the sounds on the other side. He turned the knob and walked right in.

Well, I’d heard the sounds, and I’d caught a little too much of a glimpse. I snatched my hand from his and covered my eyes with both of them, desperately hoping we’d not just interrupted his mom while she was… yeah, I couldn’t even think about it. I was so thankful I’d never had this awkward experience with my own parents. Oh, I’d walked in on Jack a few times, but that wasn’t as weird as walking in on parents.

The woman in question was on her back, on the couch in the living room, and someone was really trying to give her the goods. He had the angle all wrong, though.

Novak shouted, “What the fuck, Blaire!?” I split my fingers open, peeking out to look at him. He’d turned his back to the scene. The nameless man had paused, his ass flexed and back muscles tense.

“Fuck!” She peered over the guy's shoulder. “Novak? What are you doing here!?” she squealed at him, horrified.

I didn’t blame her, but I had to know… “Who is Blaire?”

“My fucking sister.” Novak gagged. “She’s supposed to be in France,” he told me, daring to turn his head enough to see me from his peripheral vision.

I just grinned at him. I didn’t know what else to do, so I whispered, “At least it’s not your mom.” He gagged again, and I was trying my damnedest not to laugh.

“What are you even doing here!?” He shook his head vehemently. “Never mind. Don’t answer that.” Then he walked back out the front door, slamming it behind him.

I smiled at them apologetically, pointing and spinning my index finger at their position. “You should pull her leg up. You know, to really get in there.” I nodded my head a few times, feeling good about my advice, and followed Novak out.

He was laying in the grass on his back, his arm thrown over his face, muttering about putting a sock on the doorknob. I couldn’t hold it in anymore. As I sank to the ground beside him, I cackled. Loudly. He looked up at me with narrowed eyes before his mouth began to soften. He shook his head at me, fighting his own hysterics.

It took about fifteen minutes, but eventually a trim man walked out the front door. He had his shirt hanging out of the pocket of his jeans, his shoes in his hand, and an embarrassed look on his face. “Sorry,” he mumbled as he passed by us. “She said you could come back in now.”

Novak stomped up the steps and opened the door, peering inside before walking in this time. The first thing he said when we entered was, “Where’s Mom?”

Blaire came around the corner in the hallway, hairbrush mid-stroke when she paused to look at her brother in confusion. “She went to see our dad.”

Novak huffed. “Why?”

“How the fuck should I know?” Blaire shrugged. “She goes to see him like once a year. Never asked her why.”

“But he’s such a fucking dick.” He groaned.

“You’ve been throwing the word dick around a lot lately,” I chastised him lightly.

He leaned down to whisper in my ear, “I like to throw my dick around.” I rolled my eyes when he winked at me.

“Gross.” Blaire gagged, just like her brother had.

I laughed at them both. “I like her,” I admitted to Novak.

“Of course you do,” she said, smiling smugly before turning to Novak. “Why are you here?” she questioned him with a mixture of curiosity and concern.

“I asked you first,” he sassed.

“And then you said ‘Never mind. Don’t answer that,’ before you slammed the door.” When Novak gave her an unimpressed look, she sighed. “Fine. Kadence called me in. She said they needed a lawyer to work out some official stuff, but she wouldn’t tell me what over the phone. I’m supposed to meet with her tomorrow.”
