“Yeah.”
He studies my face. Whatever he sees makes him smile.
“Good.”
For once, he leaves it there. I get in beside her, and she moves close before I finish with my seat belt.
Cam has sent the link for tomorrow’s call. I forward it to Giselle so she has the final time, then put the phone away. She looks at the notification, sets her phone beside mine, and takes my hand.
“Four o’clock,” she says.
“Tomorrow.”
She rests her head against me. I turn toward her hair and catch the vanilla she put on this morning beneath the warmth of the night outside. I don’t know what the trade will do. I know she said she loves me. For the rest of this ride, I am letting that be the thing I keep thinking about.
At the hotel, I wait until Graves stops before getting out. I take the bags while Giselle steps onto the curb.
“Breakfast at ten?” Graves asks.
“We’ll be there,” she says.
He looks at me. “Heard it from you.”
“Get in the car,” I tell him.
Giselle is laughing when we walk inside.
An older couple rides up with us. She stands beside me, holding my hand and answering when the woman asks whether we have had a nice evening. I watch her say yes with a smile so composed that I have to look at the floor numbers.
When the couple gets off, she turns toward me.
“You said hotel.”
“You see me moving.”
I kiss her before our floor arrives. At the suite, the key card flashes red on the first try. She opens her mouth. I hold it against the reader again and wait for green.
“Not a word,” I tell her.
“I was going to say I love you.”
I look down at her. She is enjoying herself, and she should be. I haven’t been this easy to get to in years.
“Say it inside.”
The small lamp beside the sofa is still on. I set the bags by the entry table, close the door, and turn toward her.
“I love you,” she says, before I can ask.
I get one hand around her waist and the other behind her neck. “I love you, too.”
She grips my shirt and kisses me back just as hard.
I walk her backward until the entry table catches her hip. I lift my head and look at where we landed, then at her, and whatever she sees in me sends a shiver through her that I feel under my hands.
“You been playing with me all damn night.”
“I was dancing.”
