A pause filled with short pants and then a gasp. Rustling. Auston could tell the moment Charlie finally lay down by the long sigh he let out.
“You comfortable, honey?”
“No. I’m hard.”
Auston chuckled. “Sorry, honey. Try to relax. Take deep breaths and listen to my voice.”
Charlie mewled, and Auston kept talking, telling him how perfect he was, how proud Auston was of him, how he’d done so good, taking everything Auston gave him, how lucky Auston was to have such a good baby, how there was no one like him.
Charlie seemed to soak it all in, muttering happily and making shy little noises as his breath evened out.
“Better, baby?” Auston asked eventually.
“Yes, Daddy. Thank you.”
“All you, honey. You did so good.”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah. Took so much. Want you to wrap yourself up in your sheet, okay? You got some water nearby?”
“Yeah.”
“Okay, drink some for me.”
Charlie did, gasping in contentment when he was done.
“Good boy. My perfect boy. How about you take a nap and we can clean you up after?”
“Okay.”
“Put your phone on the charger and leave the call going. I’ll be with you the whole time. Just let me know when you wake up.”
“Okay, Daddy.”
“Okay. Go to sleep now. I’ll be right here.”
Charlie hummed, letting out a slow, even breath.
Silence.
There was something strange in Auston’s heart as he listened to his baby sleep. Something beautiful and heavy and perfectly placed, like a growth that enhanced him somehow, made his blood rush cleaner, made his heart beat stronger.
He put earphones in so he’d know the moment Charlie woke up. He prepared a quick meal and ate it. Made himself a new food-delivery account without any of his personal information on it. Took a shower, his phone on speakerphone, popping his earphones in again when he got out. An hour ticked by. Two. And then something moved on the other end of the line—Charlie smacking his lips and humming as he woke up.
“Daddy?” And fuck, was that sweet, the first word that dropped from Charlie’s mouth.
“Hey, baby. How’re you feeling?”
“Good. Sore, but good sore.”
“Yeah?” Auston rumbled, pleased about the lazy note in Charlie's voice.
“Mmhm.”
“You can stay in bed as long as you want, but I’m gonna give you some login info for Deliverbag. Order yourself something, okay? You can go in and erase the address after. And go drink a glass of water when you’re ready.”
“Okay,” Charlie said quietly.
