“I’m not. Hey, for real. A lot of people have conditions they have to work around, and I don’t like that you’re being so mean to yourself about it. Like, if I hurt myself or something and couldn’t fuck like I can now, you’d think I’m broken or something?”
“No, of course not. I was just…” This conversation had taken an unexpected fucking turn. “I just know that you were excited for today. I was too. So I’m sorry my shit body—”
“Nope. Okay. No, Daddy. You insult yourself one more time, and I’m throwing this dildo away, for fucking real.”
Auston snorted at the image.
“Oh, you think it’s funny? I’m not joking here. I don’t like the way you’re talking about this. Bodies aren’t perfect. I don’t…I don’t like how you’re talking,” he repeated like he was at a loss for words.
Auston sobered. Charlie’s words were strained, quick and bunched together.
There was something about this that was hitting close to home.
“Sorry. Sorry, baby. You’re right. I guess I kind of deal with this shit by getting angry, but it doesn’t mean I’d get angry with anyone else if this happened to them.”
There was a little pause. “Then you shouldn’t be angry at yourself, either. It’s not good.”
“You’re right,” Auston agreed even though he couldn’t see him changing that any time soon. He knew it wasn’t healthy, but it sure beat working through feeling sad. “You’re right, baby.”
“Hmph. Okay, good. So. What usually helps your hip? Just rest?”
“Pretty much. I’ve taken some painkillers and anti-inflammatories, and I should probably lie down with my back flat on something. Could take a hot bath, too, for the ache.”
“Let’s do that. Let’s take a hot bath. I’ll join you. You can watch me wash up.”
Auston smiled even as his heart beat strangely, like something was grabbing it hard and squeezing. “You don’t have to babysit me. I can—”
“I want to, though. I planned to spend the day with you, so. I won’t even talk much if you don’t want me to, and you can get rid of me after the bath. I just want to make sure you’re okay.”
Auston sighed, the warmth in his chest dripping into every inch of him. “Okay.”
Embarrassingly, he had something he could put in his bath to sit comfortably when his hip hurt. He set it to the porcelain and filled the tub up with scalding water, foregoing any bubbles.
“Fuck,” he muttered as he got in, the water just this side of too hot, but it still felt good.
“You okay?” Charlie asked from Auston’s earphones.
“Yeah, just hot.”
“I mean, with that body of yours, I’m not surprised.”
Auston laughed, shaking his head. “You’re in a sweet-talkin’ mood today, huh?
“These are just straight facts, Daddy.”
“Uh-huh.”
“Okay, let me set the video up. Coming to you live…me and my bath,” Charlie proclaimed and, sure enough, Auston accepted the video call and could suddenly see a bath piled high with bubbles, face out of frame.
“I can’t see anything,” Auston grumbled.
“Oh shit, really? It didn’t connect? Let me see—”
“No, I just meant you’re under the water. Can’t see you.”
“Oh.” Charlie laughed. “Impatient Daddy.”
“Do an old man a favour and peek something out.”
