Clint beams at us. “One grumpy cop alpha on his way.”

Chapter 16

Khione

“Why did you call me?” Jace snarls as he stomps down onto the beach. “I was working, I can’t just take leave because you-”

He stops talking, all the sounds just dying away. I do a little spin.

“What do you think?”

He mumbles something, but it’s not in English. However, it is adorable.

“We thought you might want to really, really see this,” Clint whispers.

“But you and clothes and…all that…where did that come from?”

I laugh and scrape my hair over one shoulder, looking up at him coyly. “It’s always been mine; I just didn’t want to draw attention from any random alphas.”

“No, we don’t want that,” Jace murmurs. “Um…”

I turn again, flinging my hair out. I know I look cute, but it’s nice to see them losing their collective minds over me.

Jace glances from me to Felix, where he does a bit of a double take. I smirk. It took me twenty minutes to convince Felix to let me brush his hair back from his face. It brings out those high-angled cheekbones and stunning gold-green eyes.

He looks transformed.

Jace stares at him for so long that it gets awkward. “You…uh, look different.”

“Are you incapable of recognising people if they change something about themselves?” Felix mutters and picks up another perfect stone. I bounce over to him and take the stone, cooing at it.

“This one is the most perfect.”

I take it back to Zaire, who has a woven bag full of rocks.

“How many more do you need?”

“Two!” I chirp.

Jace walks down to the wet sand and stands there with his hands on his hips. Out of the corner of my eye, I see Clint turn to watch him.

I smile smugly at the rocks. By the time I leave, these four are going to be a pack. They won’t just be a pack, they will love each other. The potential for fireworks between the four of them is right there. They just need a spark.

And Dad always said I was a firecracker. I can light them up and let them burn.

Leaving will be hard.

It’s going to hurt, but if I know I’ve helped them come together, it will be all worth it. I paste a smile on my lips and skip to Jace, sinking and teetering in the sand.

The sky is filled with fluffy clouds, and the ocean has a thousand moving whitecaps dancing like something is cresting in and out of the water. The wind catches his hair and sends his scent straight to me.

He’s taller in his uniform. The black shirt is crisp and clean; the thick leather belt, which I would have thought would be ugly, is strangely attractive. I slow a few steps from him, suddenly intimidated.

“Jace?”

He turns slightly so he can see me, and his shoulders relax. “You kept that secret really well.”

I shrug. “It’s not safe for an omega to travel alone.” I don’t want him to think I did it deliberately, out of meanness. It wasn’t like that.
