Be still my lustful heart.
“Of course.”
I attempt to regain my composure and stride purposefully to a booth as far away from the Grimm brothers as possible.
“Will this one be okay? It’s the best seat in the house overlooking the ocean and I only put my favorite customers here.”
“Great, thanks.”
They smile as I hand them both a menu each and my words trip over themselves.
“Um, coffee?”
“How about you leave the pot?”
The smart one grins and I nod. “Bad day?”
“You could say that.”
He jerks his head toward a glowering Damian.
“It appears I’m not alone in that.”
I make sure not to glance behind me and pull a face.
“He’s getting worse and don’t get me started on his brother.”
“Why don’t you find another job?”
Casual guy says—casually.
“If it was that easy, I wouldn’t be standing here now.”
My eyes narrow.
“It’s not easy to find work when you have twin babies to add to the equation. This is as good as it gets.”
They say nothing and I hate how defensive I suddenly feel. It’s as if that sentence has relegated me to the bottom of the pile. Any interest they may have shown me—in my head anyway—is definitely no longer there.
I smile.
“Coming right up with that coffee jug.”
As I leave them with the menus, Damian stands in my way on purpose as I head to the kitchen.
“Stop flirting with the customers.”
He hisses in my ear, his hand resting on my thigh as he leans in.
“We pay you to take orders and deliver them. Be nice, earn a huge tip and then move on to the next one. Don’t make me spell it out for you again.”
I count to ten backwards, but it doesn’t help and as I bite my bottom lip to distract my rage, I push past him into the kitchen.
Doria watches as I grab a jug of coffee.
“You could report him, you know.”
“Maybe, but I’d be the one without a job at the end of it.”
