“Yeah,” Fletcher says after a second. “I know.”

I let out a slow breath, dragging a hand down my face. “It’s not just… attraction. Or whatever the hell that was the other night.”

“No,” he agrees. “It’s not.”

“She’s in my house,” I say. “With Evan. In my space every day. And I keep telling myself I can keep things separate, keep it controlled, but—”

“You can’t,” Fletcher cuts in.

I huff out a dry laugh. “Yeah. I’m starting to get that.”

He pushes off the wall, stepping closer, arms folding loosely across his chest. “You’re not built for half measures, Wayne. You never were.”

“That’s not exactly reassuring.”

“It’s the truth.”

I nod once, because it is.

CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN

June

Evan believes in theme days.

Not because they’re on a calendar. Not because they’re scheduled. But because he wakes up at 6:42 a.m., hair sticking straight up, dinosaur pajamas twisted sideways, and declares the world has a plan.

He is five. Which means he is both tiny and absolutely certain.

“Juuuune,” he calls from the hallway, dragging out my name like its urgent news. “Today is ‘splorer day.”

I blink at him over my coffee. “Explorer day?”

“Yes.” He nods so hard he almost tips forward. “We go outside. We find stuff. But not pirates.”

“Why not pirates?”

He squints at me as if I’ve missed something obvious. “Pirates are too loud.”

Fair.

Wayne is tying his boots by the door, watching this exchange as a morning show he didn’t sign up for but is secretly enjoying.

“You brush your teeth?” he asks.

Evan gasps dramatically. “I forgot.”

“You’re holding your toothbrush,” I point out.

He looks down at the toothbrush still clutched in his fist.
