Chrome frowned. “No what?”

Morrigan looked at Chris and then at him again. “You aren't supposed to be here.”

Chris smiled without humor. “Been hearing that a lot tonight.”

Morrigan shook her head. “The road shouldn't call you.”

“Well, it did,” Chris mumbled under her breath.

“Unless—” Morrigan started. Moon felt it—that same pull from earlier. It was something involving Christmas. Something coming.

“What?” Moon asked.

Morrigan didn't answer her, and Chris stepped closer. “Unless what?” Chris asked.

Morrigan's gaze settled on Chrome. “The Hollow only calls three kinds of wolves.”

Mayhem moved beside Moon. “Which are?”

“The Silver Healer, which is Moon,” she said. “The bonded guardian, which is Mayhem.”

Chris's expression hardened. “And the third?”

Morrigan stared at her. “The wolf destined to break it.” Chris looked toward Chrome, and he looked back at her. Moon's vision struck—snow, blood, the mountain road, Chris on her knees and Chrome beside her, not behind her, with his hand wrapped around hers. The black-thorn crescent carved into the ground between them. Then, Chris raised a blade.

Moon gasped, and Mayhem caught her. “What did you see?” She couldn't answer because Chris drove the blade straight into the crescent, and the earth split, the Hollow screamed, and every chain broke. Moon came back with Mayhem holding her upright. “Moon?”

She looked at Christmas, and Chris stared back at her. “What did you see?” Moon's heart pounded because she finally understood. Chris wasn't being called to Black Hollow because she was another victim. She was being called because she was supposed to destroy Black Hollow.

“You,” Moon said.

Chris frowned. “What about me?”

Moon tightened her grip on Mayhem's hand. “You're going to destroy it.”

Christmas stared at Moon like she’d lost her mind. Then she looked toward the dark mountains rising behind Morrigan. “Okay.”

Moon blinked. “Okay?”

Chris shrugged. “You said your visions show possibilities, right?”

“Yes,” Moon agreed.

“And we can change them. So I’m not going to spend the next hour freaking out about something that hasn’t happened yet,” Chris said.

Chrome stepped closer to her. “Good.”

Chris glanced at him. “I wasn’t asking for your approval.”

“Still giving it,” Chrome said. Her mouth twitched, and Moon watched them for another second before forcing her attention back where it belonged—on Black Hollow, her mother, the wolves waiting in the darkness, and the woman who had just told Moon that her mother had been murdered.

Mayhem’s fingers tightened around hers. His skin was hot—too hot. Moon looked down and saw that the black veins had returned. They were no longer stopping at his elbow. One thin line had reached beneath the sleeve of his shirt. “Mayhem.”

“I know,” he whispered.

“You’re getting worse,” she assessed.

“Still standing,” he teased.
