Mayhem sighed. “Of course there's a fucking chamber.”
Moon ignored him. “What kind of chamber?”
“The place where the Silver Blood line began,” Morrigan said.
Moon's wolf went still. “Began how?” she asked.
Morrigan hesitated, and Moon knew that she was going to hate her answer. “Answer her,” Mayhem growled.
“The first Silver Healer was buried there,” Morrigan said.
Moon frowned. “So?”
“Her body isn't what they're after,” she said.
Moon's skin prickled. “What are they after?”
“Her blood,” Morrigan breathed.
“That isn't possible,” Tempest said.
“For humans, it’s not.” Morrigan shook her head. “But for a wolf, it’s possible. Her bloodline was preserved through magic.
Chrome groaned. “Here we go again.”
Chris looked at him. “You turn into a wolf, but you don’t like magic?”
“I hate magic,” he admitted.
Morrigan continued. “The Hollow elders believed the first healer's blood could strengthen every wolf carrying her line.”
Moon's stomach dropped. “Me.”
“Yes, and your mother, and grandmother—your whole family line,” Morrigan said.
“Then why didn't they use them?” Moon asked.
“Because the Hollow only opens for a Silver Healer who has awakened,” Morrigan explained.
Moon looked at Mayhem. Her bond, her visions, and her wolf had all awakened when she met him. “They needed me to find him so that I’d awaken.”
Morrigan nodded. “They needed your bonded guardian.”
Mayhem's expression turned murderous. “So infecting me—”
“Accelerated her awakening,” Morrigan explained. Moon's stomach rolled. Chris had figured it out, too. They'd been right. Everything had been deliberate—the attack, poisoning Mayhem with night room, the bond, her visions—all of it.
“Why?” Moon whispered.
Morrigan looked at her. “Because the blood moon is tomorrow night.”
Moon's heart stopped. “What does that mean?”
“If the Hollow is opened beneath the blood moon, the Silver Healer's blood can be bound to every wolf in the ritual circle,” Morrigan said.
Moon frowned. “What does that do?”
Morrigan looked at the wolves surrounding them. “It creates a pack that cannot break.”
