“Nothing,” he lied.
“Bullshit,” she said, giving him back his own word.
Chrome smiled despite himself. “Look at you using my favorite word.”
“Don't change the subject,” she insisted.
“I'm not,” he said.
“You backed away from me,” she pointed out.
“Did I?” he asked, already knowing the truth.
“Chrome,” she breathed.
He looked toward the parking lot. “Holly Ridge isn't safe,” he said, changing the subject.
“I know,” she said.
“No. You don't.”
“Then tell me,” she insisted.
He shoved his hands into his pockets. “The pack believes mates belong to the pack before they belong to each other.”
Chris frowned. “What does that have to do with us?” Chrome's wolf pressed harder, and he stayed quiet.
“Just telling you the rules,” he said.
“I don't follow other people's rules,” she reminded.
“I noticed,” he grumbled.
“They going to have a problem with me being Dark Chaos?” she asked.
“Yes,” he breathed.
“Good,” she said.
He laughed. “You enjoy conflict?”
“No,” she lied.
“Could've fooled me,” he mumbled under his breath.
Chris looked toward the falling snow. “What happens if one of their wolves mates with an outsider?” Chrome went still. Why the fuck would she ask that?
“They don't,” he said.
“That wasn't the question,” she said.
“Outsiders are forbidden,” he said.
“But if it happens?” she asked again, pushing for an answer.
“The outsider joins Holly Ridge,” he said.
“What if they refuse?” she asked.
