His mouth tilted up in a smirk. “You haven’t seen bossy yet.”
I had—and I liked it more than I should.
He reached over and adjusted my pillow. “I meant it. Nap. Give your body some rest.”
I typed Pinterest into the browser. “Maybe later. I have a board to make.”
“More places to visit?”
“No. Stuff to decorate the apartment. I’ll start by getting another blanket.”
He chuckled. “You didn’t hear me complain.”
Our gazes tangled. A current of something passed between us. Warmth. Excitement. Trust.
I clicked on the house board and scrolled through suggestions, doing my best to ignore the heat of Alejandro’s body next to me and his attentive gaze on my profile.
“Those are nice,” he said when I lingered on the picture of white curtains.
“Something similar would be good, but I need to focus on legal bills for now. I’m just collecting inspiration for later.”
His phone buzzed with a video chat request from Manu.
I smoothed my hair as Alejandro pressed accept. “¿Qué pasa?” What’s up?
Manu’s smiling face took up the screen. Behind him, amber restaurant lights gleamed, and I glimpsed a few empty tables.
“Getting ready to open for dinner,” he said. “Hi, Nova. How are you feeling?”
“Better,” I said. “Thank you.”
“I see you’re taken care of. Did that boss of yours feed you like I taught him?”
Alejandro groaned.
I stifled a giggle. “Yes, he did. He’s a great cook. Like you.”
“Definitely not as good as me, but you’re biased. It’s okay.”
“Did anything happen?” Alejandro asked.
Manu’s grin broadened. “Well, I proposed to Camila last night.”
Next to me, Alejandro sat up straighter. “You did? Felicidades. Did she say yes?”
“Like she had a choice.” Manu ran his fingers through his wavy hair. “I’m kidding, of course. She does have a choice. In fact, I won’t sleep well until the wedding band is on her finger.”
Alejandro glanced at me. “You better get married fast, then.”
I smiled, and he gave me a smile of his own.
“I’m happy for the two of you,” he said to Manu.
“Congratulations,” I added.
A man approached Manu and said something in Spanish.
“Sorry, dinner rush.” Manu sighed. “And thank you, Nova. Before I go, Camila and I are hosting an engagement celebration at the end of November. I know you’ll be in Spain then, Ale, and the racing season will have just wrapped up. We found a house near Pradollano. Might be too early to ski, but Cami loves snow. We’re looking forward to having you and Nova with us. I’ll text you the details later.”
