Scarlett sighed, tapping her nails on the glass. “An agreement would benefit him way more than you, and he knows it. Bet that’s why he’s doing all of this.”

“He also claimed I cheated. Funny, right? At least now he wouldn’t be wrong.”

Scarlett’s eyes widened. “Wait a minute. Did you finally give in and sleep with your boss? That still isn’t cheating, though.”

“I didn’t give in,” I said. “Alejandro did. We went to his friend’s engagement celebration in Sierra Nevada, and I offered to spend a night together. Only one.”

The best, and the worst decision of my life. Now I knew how he kissed. Knew that sex with him was the best I’d ever had—or would ever have. But he was my boss, and our kiss at the office proved neither of us was good at keeping things professional.

Scarlett’s lips split into a grin. “About time. I guess it met your expectations?”

“Blew them out of the water.” He’d read my body like it was his own. Had taken his time discovering what I liked and pleasuring me. If only I’d known before sex could be like this and not a rushed, mechanical act. I traced the rim of my glass with my fingertip. “But then the sun rose, and we were back to being boss and employee. It was what I wanted, and what he wanted, too. I don’t think he wants a relationship.”

“Did he tell you that?”

I shook my head, my stomach tightening. “There’s this girl who manages his Spanish agency in his absence. I saw him with her, and there’s definitely history there. She has a kid who kind of looks like him.”

Cris and I had chatted briefly about work, like two polite acquaintances. She’d seemed friendly, but why wouldn’t she be when I wasn’t a threat?

“Do you know her full name?” she asked.

“Cristina Sánchez.”

Scarlett pulled her phone from her purse, frowning as she scrolled. I knew that look—her detective mode was on.

“Scar.” I groaned. “It’s not worth it. Even if Alejandro wanted to be with someone, it wouldn’t be me. I work for him. I know it’s a deal-breaker.”

“From Guerrero Sports Agency, right? Look. Is that her?”

Scarlett turned her phone around. On screen, Cris was hugging a handsome man. The picture was dated a week ago, and the caption read feliz contigo, mi amor. Happy with you, my love.

“You might’ve jumped to conclusions,” Scarlett said. “You know that’s my favorite sport too, but this lady’s feed is full of that man, and he definitely isn’t your hot boss.”

I slumped against the back of the couch, my traitorous heart full of something like relief. “I don’t get it,” I whispered. “They seemed close.”

“But he never told you they were together.”

“He said he’d dated someone in Spain.” I gulped down the last of my wine. “And quoting him, they occasionally run into each other at events. It could’ve been her.”

“If she works for him, running into each other is an odd way to put it,” Scarlett said, studying Cris’s pictures. “Looks like she’s been with this guy for a while.”

I rubbed my palms over my flushed face. “Still means nothing, Scar. He never told me he wanted more.”

“Do you?”

My pulse quickened, warmth flooding my chest as memories of him surged. Conversations. Jokes. Kisses. I liked him. More than liked him. He was kind. Smart. He made me feel cherished. He listened to me and cared about me, but I hardly knew him. There were so many things he kept to himself.

I’d rushed into a relationship once. I couldn’t do it again, and this time, my job was on the line.

The most sensible thing I could do was to keep my distance and focus on work.

I left my empty glass on the coffee table, shrugging. “It doesn’t really matter. It can’t happen. Did I tell you I started setting up my photography business?”

Scarlett shifted closer. “You did? That’s amazing.”

“I’ve always wanted to make money with my photos,” I admitted. “And I’d rather have another source of income.” In case Alejandro no longer wanted me at the agency. In case being in his proximity without being with him became unbearable. “I only created a portfolio. Still need to do the rest.”

“That’s a great start, hon.”
