“He soothes something in my soul.”

“Something our father never managed to fill.” Fleur looks at me cautiously. “Like I keep saying, you need to be careful.”

I nibble my lip. “Have you ever had sex and felt it in your soul?”

“Sometimes I feel it in my fucking uterus.”

“I feel free and trapped with him.”

“And how does Felix feel about you?” asks Fleur. “What does he get out of targeting Vesper? More publicity? He never wanted that in the first place.”

I exhale a shaky breath. I’m keeping a secret from Fleur, and we’ve only ever been honest with each other. But if I tell her who Felix really is, she’ll flip.

We look out for each other more than we look out for ourselves. It’s always been that way. Fleur will want me to leave Felix for good. She’ll tell me how toxic this thing is between us, and hell, maybe it is, but I’ve never known what’s good for me.

I’ll go against her word, upset her even more by staying. She doesn’t deserve that.

“Changing the topic—look what I found in the kitchen cabinet yesterday.” Fleur shoves the emergency contraception in my hands. “Take it. Now.”

“Shit.” I open the box, pop the tiny tablet and swallow right away.

“Care to explain yourself?” Fleur arches her brow at me after I’m done swallowing.

“Nope,” I wince, hating myself for being the irresponsible one here. “You can tell I don’t do this a lot.”

“No, but you’re having sex a lot, and this pill might not be effective anymore.”

“My head has been all over the place, and I’m not even on drugs.”

Fleur glances at me pointedly. “Love is a drug, the most powerful one of them all.”

“I’m not in love.”

Yeah, totally not in love at all… after choosing to keep Felix’s mafia life a secret from my sister.

“An Egyptian mummy?” I sneer as Felix hands over my costume. “Hard pass.”

“Trust me, I’m against the Halloween-themed launch just as much as you are, but my men think it will be a good idea, a way to take the spotlight off you if you wear something modest.”

“Your men think that?”

“No, they’re concerned about the Bratva allegations.”

“And dressing up as monsters will take the heat off?”

“It can be good to play up to the allegations sometimes, keep things interesting.”

“I’ll show you how to keep things interesting,” I say, unzipping my bag and pulling out Fleur’s vampire costume.

Felix grabs the costume, analyzing the cross necklace, and the deep red corset. He seems to pay close attention to the latter. “Red is what you wore—”

“When my father was trying to turn me into a sex symbol?” I arch my eyebrow. “Yes. If I’m going to do this, I want to do it properly. You’re launching new presidential suite hotel rooms, and we stayed in one of those rooms together.” I take the red corset from him. “Karma is going to sting like a bitch tonight.”

“And your father will see who owns you,” says Felix, a smirk crawling onto his face.
