I lay back on his bed, sighing at how comfortable it was. It was so much nicer than my shitty full-size mattress at my mom’s. I could languish in this thing forever.

Logan slipped back into the room and quietly shut the door. He held two glasses of water in his hands, and he set one on the bedside table next to me. “Drink this so you don’t have a hangover tomorrow.”

I sat up and did as he asked while he took his tablet out and started watching hockey on it.

“Sorry, I gotta review some game tape for tomorrow. I’m on the road again.”

I lay back on the bed. “That’s okay. I’m probably going to pass out.”

He bent down and pressed a kiss to my temple. “Sleep well, princess. I’m right here.”

I should have been concerned by how his words comforted me. How it felt like we were slipping into a relationship. But instead, I let the drunken sleep take hold of me.

I jolted awake to the sound of my baby’s cries. I sat up in bed, but before I could run to her, Logan sprinted out of the room.

I groaned and lay back on his bed, my head pounding from the impending hangover I’d have when I woke up again. On the baby monitor, I heard Logan trying to soothe my daughter. I should have run in there, not him, but my chest felt warm when I heard him talking to her.

A few moments later, the shadow of his figure blocked the doorway. He walked in with my daughter in his arms and Liam holding his hand. I sat up on the bed and held my arms out to my crying baby. Logan walked over and put her in my arms.

“Shush, Mommy’s got you,” I soothed her while I kissed her chubby little cheeks.

Logan got back into the bed and lifted Liam up in between us.

Liam patted Rosie’s head. “It’s okay, Rosie,” he told her.

Oh, my heart. The way he was so sweet with her made me want to squeeze the little boy in my arms.

Rosie was not letting up, though. She cried her heart out. I rocked her and tried to get her to settle, but she reached her little arms out for Logan.

“She wants you.”

Logan took her, and she immediately grabbed hold of his beard. “Hey, little miss. None of that, okay?”

Liam snuggled down against me, and I lay back in bed with him by my side. I ran my hand through his hair, hoping at least he could fall asleep while we tried to soothe Rosie.

“I’m sorry,” I sobbed through frustrated tears. I felt like she was regressing, like she knew Seth wanted nothing to do with her.

“She just wants to grab my beard,” Logan said as he tried to pry her tiny hands off his beard. I gave him an apologetic look, but he smiled at me in return.

My heart did backflips while I watched him bounce my baby and hum the Dragonspire theme song to her. Because he remembered I said it was the only thing that got her asleep.

Unlike my ex-husband, Logan was a decent man. How was it that this man who I was barely friends with was a better dad to my child than her own father? And why was it so sexy to watch him soothe my crying baby, caring for her like she could be his own?

“Okay, little miss. Time to go back to bed,” Logan whispered.

Liam shook his head against me. “We want to sleep with you.”

I kissed the top of his head. “Oh, do you now? Did Rosie tell you that?”

Liam nodded vigorously.

Liar. But a cute one.

I gave Logan a questioning glance over the top of Liam’s head, but he put Rosie next to Liam in the center of the bed. My heart squeezed in my chest when he kissed the top of her head and then did the same to his nephew.

As I stared into the eyes of this man who wasn’t even my boyfriend, I realized this was what I pictured when I thought I was getting my happily ever after with Seth. I thought I had a partner who would do the hard stuff with me and help me take care of the kids.

I couldn’t think those thoughts about Logan. We were struggling single parents juggling kids and careers. We couldn’t add a relationship into the mix. Hell, that was why I’d only seen him in passing for the last two weeks. It had only been a random happenstance that he invited me to the Halloween party.
