“Where are you going?” She called up to me.

“Getting dressed!” I yelled down at her. I pulled on my jeans, an undershirt, and a long-sleeved plaid shirt.

“Why?”

I stomped down the steps, went to the front door, and pulled on my boots. “I’m gonna go chop some more wood for the fireplace.”

She stared at me with her mouth agape.

“What?” I asked as I shrugged on my jacket.

“You’re gonna go outside and chop wood for me?”

I furrowed my brow at the giddy look on her face. “Yes? Is that a problem?”

She laughed and shook her head. “Nope.”

“Avs, why are you being weird?”

She laughed again, and the look she gave me cut into me. She looked at me the way she would before straddling me or taking my cock in her mouth. What the hell?

“It’s like all my fantasies come true.”

I gave her a confused look. “Huh. How’s that?”

She gestured to me. “It’s the beard and the red plaid and the fact you’re about to chop wood to keep me all nice and toasty.”

“I don’t understand.”

“You look like a total sexy mountain man!” she exclaimed.

“Oh, is that your fantasy? You like the lumberjack look?” I teased.

“Go chop me wood, husband,” she teased back and returned to reading her book.

I grabbed the maul I left next to the wood rack and walked outside. I went over to the stump next to the big tree and put a log on top of it. I put on my safety goggles and started splitting the wood.

I didn’t want to run out of wood while we were here. Avery said there was heat in the cabin, but I think she enjoyed sitting in front of the fire. I liked taking care of her and providing for her and the baby. My inner caveman told me I was supposed to, that I had to sacrifice everything for her.

I split wood until my muscles were aching from overuse, and I was sweating from the exertion. I piled the wood pieces into my arms and went back inside. I put all the chopped pieces into the wood rack next to the front door.

“I think we’re good,” Avery tried to reassure me from the kitchen where she was cracking eggs into a mixing bowl.

I leaned against the wall and tried to catch my breath. “I don’t want to run out. What if it snows again and all the wood gets wet?”

She rolled her eyes at me and walked over to the thermostat, pushing a couple of buttons. “Then we’ll turn up the heat.”

“I’ll be back,” I muttered. I didn’t miss her rolling her eyes at me.

I was outside for so long that my muscles screamed in agony. I made a couple of trips to bring all the wood inside, but I was satisfied with my work. I shed off my jacket and stomped off my boots while I got the fire going.

“Come eat,” Avery called to me as she put a plate of food and a cup of coffee down on the table.

I poked at the wood and made sure the fire was stoked before I walked into the kitchen. I rolled up the sleeves of my shirt and washed up in the sink.

Avery eased herself into a chair at the table. “Don’t make a pregnant lady wait. I’m going to eat everything.”

I chuckled and took the seat across from her. I surveyed the plate of eggs, bacon, toast, and a large stack of French toast in front of us. “You must be starving,” I teased as I started on the French toast.
