“Okay. I’ll call him tomorrow.”

He pressed a soft kiss to my forehead and leaned me onto my side. I closed my eyes to the feeling of his chest pressed against me and his hand protectively on my stomach.

When I woke up the next morning, I was confused because Nolan wasn’t in bed next to me. I was cuddled up in the blankets, and I didn’t want to leave the comfort of the bed, but I had to get to school. I smelled something good cooking downstairs. I tip-toed down the steps and found my fiancé making breakfast. My fiancé, who came home late last night, was awake and making me breakfast.

“Aw, Avs, don’t do that!” Nolan said while he looked over his shoulder at me.

I hefted myself into one of the kitchen chairs. “Do what?” I asked, trying to keep the tears from falling.

“Cry over my bad cooking,” he joked.

That put a smile on my face. “Sorry, hormones.”

He came over to me and kissed me on the top of my head while he slid eggs and toast on the plate in front of me. “No morning sickness anymore, right?”

I shook my head. Today officially marked the second trimester, and I had woken up feeling energetic. “I think it passed. Just horny and hungry.”

He laughed. “Well, that’s what I’m here for.”

I dove into breakfast but watched the clock to make sure I wasn’t late for school. When I lived across the street, being late was never a problem. Now that I was living on the other side of town, I needed to add extra time to my commute so I wasn’t late. Nolan poured me coffee, and I savored it, as it was the only way I would get through trying to teach Shakespeare to my kids today.

Nolan took my plate away when I finished and started loading the dishwasher.

“You didn’t have to make me breakfast, but thanks.”

“I wanted to make sure you ate before you left. You’re gonna drive to school, right?”

I hadn’t thought about it; it wasn’t a far walk over to the school. That was the benefit of living in such a small town. Pregnancy was tiresome, though, and the idea of walking over there didn’t appeal to me, especially while bogged down with my bag.

“Yeah, I’m not walking. I better start getting ready.”

I kissed him on the cheek and went upstairs to take a quick shower. When I was getting dressed, I realized I had a problem. One, I still hadn’t unpacked all my clothes. And two, I needed to get maternity wear. I was practically falling out of my bra, and my dress pants didn’t fit anymore.

That’s how Nolan found me, sitting on the bed crying because I had popped the button off of my favorite pair of pin-striped dress pants.

He kneeled in front of me and took my face in his hands. He was such a champ for dealing with my constant crying. “Hey, what’s going on?”

“I can’t fit into my pants!” I fumed.

He placed his big hand on my stomach. “Avery, first, I love your curves. Second, you’re growing our child inside you.”

“I feel so unattractive right now, and I’m not even that big yet!” I said with a sob.

“Hey, I think you’re sexy as hell, okay? You carrying our baby? That’s sexy. What if you wore one of your dresses to work instead?”

I wiped my face with the back of my hand. “Okay,” I blubbered.

“You know you have me to lean on, okay? I’m here.”

“I know.”

“Do you? Because it feels like you want all the weight on your shoulders right now.”

I shook my head. “No, I know. Sorry, you’re dealing with a lot of crying pregnant lady lately.”

He brushed my hair out of my face. “S’okay, baby.”

I leaned into his touch. “Thanks. I better find a dress that works. I have to talk to the Principal about my maternity leave plans.”
