“Yeah?”
I gestured to the room we were sitting in. “We’re not exactly swimming in money. I need to provide for my baby. To provide for Avery.”
“I think you’re suffering from stupid man syndrome, and you need to get your head out of your ass.”
“Man, fuck you!”
My little brother laughed. “Too easy, man.”
“Asshole!”
“I think you need to relax. Yeah, we’re not swimming in dough, and Avery doesn’t make a lot of money on her teacher salary, but you both love what you do. You’re both gonna do everything you can to make sure your baby’s taken care of. And she will be.”
“She? We don’t know the gender yet.”
“Gemma has a feeling.”
I rolled my eyes.
My brother laughed. “I love Gemma like a sister, but she’s something else sometimes. Are you good now?”
I shook my head. “Avery didn’t tell her dad.”
“Tell him what?”
“About the baby. Gemma let it slip.”
My brother winced. “Well… that sucks, but I’m sure she had her reasons. You have to talk to her, not grunt and do things for her like she understands what that means.”
I sighed. I felt like I was getting this from both Gemma and my brother today. What gives?
I stood up from the chair. “I gotta go check on the hops.”
“Would it kill you to talk about your feelings?” my brother yelled after me as I walked out of the office.
I pretended I didn’t hear him and kept walking.
Chapter Fifteen
AVERY
“Hey, what are you doing up?” Nolan asked.
I was still awake and sitting up in our bed when he came home from the brewery. I smiled and watched him strip off his shirt and get out of his jeans. I dropped the pen I was using, and my eyes trailed down his chest.
“Avs?” he asked.
“Huh?” I asked and shook myself out of my daze. His brown eyes twinkled with amusement. He totally caught me being hot for his bod.
“My eyes are up here.”
“That’s not what I’m interested in right now,” I muttered.
He chuckled and got into bed beside me. “Is that why you’re still up?”
I glanced at the clock; I hadn’t realized it was eleven o’clock already. Since it was a school night, I should get to bed soon.
I shook my head. “Nope, I still need to finish grading these papers.”
