I grunted as I drank my coffee.
“I’m sorry,” she muttered.
I nodded, but I still didn’t understand why she had reacted that way when she saw Kath.
“Why did seeing my ex-wife bother you so much? I told you Kath and I are still friendly.”
She grimaced. “Because Gem told me you looked a little too comfortable on New Year’s Eve.”
“Avs, we were talking about you.”
“What?”
“There’s a photo from our wedding hanging on the wall, and she said we looked happy. She told me to not make the same mistakes I made with her. That I should tell you how I feel once in a while.”
Avery sat back, and her mouth formed a little ‘O.’
I laughed. “Were you jealous?”
She muttered under her breath.
“Seriously?”
“Yes,” she grumbled.
“Why?”
She sighed and ran her hand through her hair nervously. “She’s so gorgeous, and I’m so… not.”
“C’mere,” I growled.
She jumped at the gruffness in my voice.
I crooked a finger at her when she didn’t get up right away. She pushed her chair out and walked over to me. I pulled her into my lap and cupped her face. “You’re sexy as hell, you know that, right?”
She shook her head.
I trailed my hands down her curvy body. “You’ve always been sexy to me. Even more so now that you’re carrying my child. I don’t give a fuck about Kath.”
She grimaced. “You’re not gonna think that when I’m as big as a house in a couple of months.”
I framed her face with my hands. “Avery, I’m always gonna think that. But you gotta know that Kath’s my past, and you’re my future.”
“You don’t want to get married again.”
I pointed back and forth between the two of us. “This, us, is my forever. I want you forever and always.”
Tears welled up in her eyes. “Nolan…”
“Baby… please stop crying,” I groaned.
She laughed through the tears and rested her head in the crook of my neck. “I’m sorry, I can’t help it. You’re the asshole who had to get me pregnant.”
We laughed together, but when she smiled at me, I knew it was going to be okay. Our daughter was fine, and in a few short months, she would be here with us.
“I have to tell you something about Kath, though.”
I furrowed my brow. “Did she say something to you? Is that why you freaked out?”
