We sat on the bed together, and I put my hands on my stomach. I was still mad at her. Her not picking up her phone and not coming to the hospital gutted me. It made me realize that I always dropped everything for my sister. I was always there to pick up her pieces, but she never returned the favor.
The person who always picked up my pieces was Nolan, and I was being an asshole to him.
“I’m sorry,” Gemma spoke first.
I clenched my jaw and nodded.
“You’re really mad, aren’t you?”
I squeezed my eyes shut. “I needed you, Gem. I was breaking apart, and I needed my sister, but you didn’t even bother to text me back. It was the very least you could have done.”
She frowned and bit her lip. “I’m sorry, Avs.”
“I needed you, and you weren’t there.”
She screwed up her face. “You don’t need me. You have Nolan.”
“I needed my sister. I always drop everything for you when you have a problem, but you never return the favor.”
“I’m really sorry, Avs.”
“You should be! I’m pissed off at you!”
She bit her lip and put a hand on mine. “But you don’t need me.”
“Yes, I do! I needed my sister to tell me everything was going to be okay when I thought I was gonna lose the baby.”
“But you didn’t need me because you had Nolan. I know he was there for you, holding your hand through it all.”
I sighed and ran a frustrated hand down my face. She was right; Nolan had done that. He put on a brave face for me and had been the shoulder I should have leaned on, but instead, I treated him like a Grade A asshole.
“I think my marriage is over,” I admitted in a quiet voice and wrapped my arms around myself.
“What?” she shrieked.
“Nolan and I got into a big fight that night, and we haven’t been talking.”
She grabbed my hand. “Oh, Avs. What happened?”
“My normal insecurities.”
She raised an eyebrow and gestured with her hand for me to go on.
I sighed. “We ran into his ex-wife.”
“So?”
I gave her a look.
She nudged me with her arm.
“She’s gorgeous.”
My sister held out her hand and gestured to me. “Is she pregnant with Nolan’s baby? No. Did he drop everything for her? No. Did he actually express his feelings for her? A big no! That’s why they got divorced.”
“They got divorced because he wanted kids.”
She shook her head. “Dec told me it wasn’t just that. They were extremely unhappy. Dec thinks they only got married because Nolan was stressed about keeping a roof over their heads. You know Nolan, he would rather chop off his hand than tell someone how he feels. When I first started working at the brewery, I thought he hated me because all he did was grunt. Dec had to tell me that meant I was doing a good job.”
