She shook her head. “No. It would end us.”
I tilted her chin up at me. “What are you talking about?”
Her eyes blazed in anger. “I saw how you looked at her.”
“Who?”
“Your fucking ex-wife!”
I cocked an eyebrow at her. “What does Kath have to do with you and me?”
“You only married me because you got me pregnant. I know you still love her.”
I blinked at her. Where the fuck did she get that from?
She stared back at me, and the hurt on her face felt like a knife to my chest.
“You really think that?” I asked.
She nodded.
“What makes you think I still love my ex-wife?” I snapped. “The one who I told you broke my heart, and she’s why I can’t discuss my feelings? What makes you think I only married you because of the baby? Haven’t I fucking proved myself enough?”
I got out of bed in a huff.
“Where are you going?”
I shook my head. “I can’t do this right now. We’re both upset. Tonight was traumatic. I know you’re hurting at the idea we could have lost the baby, but don’t take it out on me and try to invent shit that doesn’t exist.”
I grabbed my pillow from off of my side of the bed.
“What are you doing?” she asked.
“Going to sleep on the couch. I’m not fighting with you tonight.”
“But it’s true. If I lost the baby, our marriage would be over.”
I scrubbed a hand down my face. “I don’t know how to tell you how fucking wrong you are. I love you, and I know you’re going through some shit right now, but don’t tell me how I’m supposed to feel or tell me I don’t love you.”
I didn’t wait for her to say anything else and trudged down the stairs. Maybe it was immature of me, but I didn’t see the use of us getting into another knock-down fight. I didn’t understand why she thought if she lost the baby, that meant the two of us were over. I thought we had gone over all this shit already.
It pissed me off.
At Avery for thinking I couldn’t be enough for her. At Gemma for not showing up when Avery needed her. At Kath for existing and putting dark thoughts into Avery’s head. Even though Kath did nothing wrong. I was pretty sure we got seen so quickly because of Kath. We should thank her, not have her force a wedge in-between us.
I laid on the couch and put my pillow over my head, and screamed into it. I shoved it behind my head and stared up at the ceiling. This was totally fucked.
My phone beeped on the coffee table, and I swiped at it. I growled when I saw a text from Gemma.
GEMMA: Sorry! My phone died. What’s going on?
ME: Fucking forget it.
GEMMA: Nolan! What’s wrong? Is it something with the baby?
ME: Ask your fucking sister.
I shut off my phone and rubbed my beard in frustration.
