“I didn’t know you were still friendly with her,” Avery spat. I didn’t recognize the venom in my wife’s voice.
“Our divorce was amicable. You knew that,” I reminded her.
“You said she broke your heart.”
“She did, but I broke her heart, too. She’s trying to help us.”
Avery nodded, but I could see the dark thoughts clouding her head. I tried to lace her hand through mine, but she pulled away. She was shrinking away from me, and I didn’t understand why.
I pulled out my phone and texted Gemma.
ME: You need to get to the hospital now.
Five minutes went by, and she still hadn’t responded to me. I texted my brother instead.
ME: Is Gem at the brewery?
I saw the dots typing, and then a text popped up from him.
DEC: No. Why?
ME: Nevermind.
DEC: Are Avery and the baby okay?
ME: Don’t know yet.
I didn’t know where Gemma was, and it really pissed me off. Avery constantly dropped everything for the girl because she was a dutiful sister. Why couldn’t Gemma bother to return the favor? I loved Gemma, but sometimes her flightiness was too much. Especially right now, when my wife was hurting, and all she wanted was to be comforted by her sister.
It stung a bit that Avery didn’t want that comfort from me. I was her husband. She was supposed to lean on me at times like this.
I slid my phone back into my pocket and leaned my elbows on my knees. Avery still wasn’t talking to me, and I wasn’t sure what to do. I wanted to be her shoulder to lean on, but she wasn’t letting me.
“Are you in pain?” I asked.
She shook her head.
“Maybe…”
“Are you the doctor?” she snapped.
I sighed and shook my head.
We waited in silence for another half hour before they finally called us back. I went with her and sat in the chair next to the examination table, feeling like a fool, while she talked to the nurse about what happened. I felt like there was nothing I could do to help the woman I loved. If we lost the baby, I didn’t know what I was going to do. I loved Avery, and I knew Peanut hadn’t been planned, but I wanted our baby. I wanted a family with her. I wanted to give her the happily ever after she had been chasing for as long as I knew her.
We waited for the doctor, and Avery retold him everything she told the nurse.
“We’re gonna run some tests. But if you aren’t in pain, I don’t think this is a cause for concern. Sometimes a little spotting is nothing to be worried about,” the doctor told us.
“We were just at the doctor today,” I said.
“Did you have a pelvic exam?”
Avery shook her head.
“When was the last time you had sex?”
Avery’s cheeks went red.
