ChapterNineteen
Avery was very thankful that she was going to be back in Lucas’s arms. Even if it was under stressful circumstances, it felt so right.
“Stop thinking about it,” she said, pulling away from him and looking up into his eyes. “George knows what he’s doing. Trust me.”
He nodded once quickly. “What now?”
He’d just returned from Edgeview after gathering the cats and everything his mother and sister would need for a few days.
“Now you help me move my bags upstairs.” She smiled. “Then we can cook for your family so they have a good meal before we take them over to the cottage and get them settled in.”
“Okay.” He took her hand in his, then leaned down and brushed his lips across hers. “Thank you for this.”
“Any time.” She smiled and followed him into the kitchen.
She helped him prepare a smaller meal just for the four of them. When his mother and sister knocked on the back door, she let them in. Instead of sitting out in the dining room, they took their food out to the patio area and ate under the new string lights.
“We won’t have many quiet nights like this soon,” Lucas said, leaning back in his chair.
“It will be wonderful,” his mother replied.
“I wish we could move into the house tonight,” Sophia added.
“You’re welcome to stay at my place until then,” Avery offered. “Just as long as your brother allows me to stay with him.” She smiled.
Lucas took her hand and lifted it to his lips. “As long as you want, you’re welcome.”
She felt her stomach flutter at the simple touch. Since the other night, she’d replayed the night over and over in her head. How tender he was. How much she wanted him to touch her again.
“On that note.” Sophia sat up a little. “I think I can get us to the cottage.” She stood up. “Keys?” She held her hand out to Avery, who laughed and handed them over. “Rusty and Luna are tired and want to get out of their carriers.” She motioned to the two cats, who were sleeping peacefully beside them.
“If you need anything,” Avery started.
“You’ve done enough.” Emily touched her shoulder, then leaned down and planted a kiss on her cheek. “Thank you. Goodnight.” She kissed Lucas and then started to lift one of the cats, but Lucas jumped up and carried both of the carriers to his mother’s car.
Seeing Sophia drive them away, Avery relaxed. Then Lucas came back and pulled her to her feet and led her inside.
“What about the dishes?” She laughed.
“Later,” he said with a smile. “For now, I think it’s only fair that I properly thank you.” They stepped inside and suddenly her back was against the wall as his mouth covered hers.
Passion. Need. Heat.
There was so much of it, she became breathless as her head spun and her desire spiked.
“I’ll lock up,” he said against her lips.
“I’ll take the front door; you take the back.” She ducked under his arms and rushed through the building to flip the front door locks.
They met back at the staircase, their bodies slamming into one another. Her hands moved to his hair as she jumped up and wrapped her legs around him.
“My god,” he groaned as he fumbled to open the door to the stairs. “I can’t seem to move fast enough.”
She laughed as he almost dropped her on the staircase.
“Hurry.” She trailed her mouth over his neck. “Hurry,” she said again when they reached the top.
She didn’t realize they’d made it to the bedroom until her back hit the mattress. He must have set his bed up fully because it was no longer on the ground.
