“I don’t think so.”
Sarah snorted. “Good.”
Susie raised her eyebrows at her tall friend. “Good?”
“Yeah. Cook said she was here earlier during prep.” Sarah crossed her arms and glowered after Molly. “That bitch took all the raisins.”
“Huh.” Susie watched Molly leave the cafeteria without so much as a backward glance. Apparently, this was not her first outing since her midnight foray.
“Bit of an odd one, isn’t she?” Susie couldn’t help but say.
“Yeah. A real nutter.”
Susie followed Sarah to the ovens, chewing the inside of her cheek as she considered Molly’s change in behaviour. The wolf was starting to rub her the wrong way, and a part of her was relieved that Molly had declined to join them that night.
Chapter 22
Cornered Animal
Susie
An hour and forty-five minutes later, Susie and Sarah were hurrying down the deserted corridors, balancing trays of steaming cookies.
“I hate being late,” Sarah moaned. “Bet the others are already at the library.”
“It’s fine,” Susie reassured her, adjusting her bag over her shoulder.
“Except Harry’s going to be up my ass about being late.”
Susie grinned. The only reason they were late was because Sarah had opted to make an extra batch of cookies at the last minute—chocolate chip, Harry’s favourite—all while complaining about none other than Harry the entire time.
“It really doesn’t matter if we’re late,” Susie consoled as they entered the west wing. “It’s just book club.”
“Yeah, but it’s Harry,” Sarah scowled.
Susie’s grin widened, partly because of how cute her friends were, but also because the delicious smell of melted chocolate was adding to her excitement. Tonight was going to be fun.
“Stop smiling like that,” Sarah chastised. “You know there’s nothing going on between us.”
“Of course, there isn’t,” Susie agreed.
“We’re just friends.”
“I know.”
“And that’s all we are.”
Susie pressed her lips together to hide her smile. “Exactly.”
Sarah had fancied Harry since their very first shouting match, but she’d never told him that. And Harry’s mind was usually racing at a thousand miles an hour. He was aware of anything and everything, yet somehow, failed to notice Sarah’s pining looks.
Sarah worried the edge of a cookie away with her fingers and popped it into her mouth distractedly. “Besides, Harry prefers males.”
Susie shrugged a shoulder. “I wouldn’t be so sure. When it comes to Harry, he can go either way.”
He’d had as many female partners as male partners—all of them ‘casual shags’ as he called them.
“The more alpha, the better,” Sarah said, imitating Harry’s fast-paced manner of speaking. “His words.”
