Her chest tightened.
Arken won’t let him. He won’t.
Henrikk’s mouth curled into a cruel smile. “I thought you had better taste, Arken. Well, I’m willing to entertain the possibility that you do not love her. It’s easy enough to believe, except that I know you so well. Still. Let us put that declaration of non-love to the test. If this is indeed a meaningless affair, Arken, and this wolf is truly nothing to you…then you cannot have any objections if I fuck her as well?”
Susie’s blood froze, her brain shutting down at Henrikk’s words.
Her mouth was dry, and she couldn’t make her mouth form any words to help her situation.
With just a few words, Henrikk had made her small, worthless. Paralysed.
They had the opposite effect on Arken. He’d been still as a statue up to this point. Now, he sprang to his feet, lunging at Henrikk with fangs bared, and his fist drawn back in a right hook.
Susie moved without thinking, reaching to restrain him.
He must not hit the King.
The King will kill him, or worse. Henrikk was always capable of worse.
“Arken, stop!” she shrieked, seizing hold of his shirt sleeve.
He was much stronger than her, and she shouldn’t have been able to stop him from throwing the punch, but Arken froze the instant she shouted, his arm already mid-swing.
Henrikk was standing calmly, smiling in amusement at Arken’s fist which had almost connected with his face.
“Don’t hurt him,” she stammered, pulling him away.
Henrikk began to cackle, a low, gleeful sound that reverberated through her. “Go ahead, Arken. Pay no heed to your little wolf. Strike your King—if you dare—and see what the consequences are. I promise, I will be generous with my time when I return the favour.”
Arken snarled, and Susie gripped his arm tighter. “Don’t, Arken. Please. You can’t hit him. It’s not worth it.”
He’ll hurt you. He’ll kill you. I can’t lose you.
Henrikk was shaking with silent laughter. “This…” he licked his teeth as if savouring the moment, “could not have been better arranged. I wasn’t sure, when I first came in. Oh, Arken. How inconvenient for you. And how deliciously fortunate for me.”
What was he talking about?
“Please, Your Majesty,” she whispered. “Just leave. I’ve never done anything to hurt anyone.”
The words sounded so feeble.
“Poor innocent flower,” Henrikk said, and he almost sounded sympathetic. “Didn’t you know? It’s always the innocent who suffer the most.”
Her stomach muscles coiled.
“Please, no.”
It was no use.
She looked at Arken, whose lips were pressed into a tight line, his eyes tense, his complexion taking on a greyish hue, as if he were on the verge of throwing up.
Suddenly, Henrikk advanced on her. Susie let out a frightened squeak and backed away, purposefully leading him away from Arken.
She hadn’t wanted Arken to attack Henrikk, but now, her mind was flooded with fear.
Arken wouldn’t let anything bad happen to her, would he? He’d promised to take care of her. She wanted to protect him, but there had to be a point where he would intervene to protect her…wasn’t there?
There was no time to dissect her jumbled mess of thoughts. Henrikk’s hands clamped over her arms, and he picked her up as if she were a doll.
