She considered this for a moment. “Yes. Sure.”

Nathaniel’s heart skipped a beat.

She said yes.

Logical choice or not, having Kira move in would give him more time with her. More seconds, which added up to more minutes, more precious hours when they already had so few left. He lived and breathed for those moments he could be near her, even if things between them were tense.

They continued Kira’s training that evening in his bedroom. He’d bought her lingerie while she was in class—a concoction of sheer silk with bright pink satin ribbons that looked beautiful against her dark skin. Any colour would have been flattering on her, and it drove him crazy to see her dark nipples showing through the translucent fabric.

For the first half of the evening, he lounged in his chair with his feet on his desk, throwing Kira a ball for her to fetch over and over. She retrieved it each time without complaint, crawling around his bedroom floor on her hands and knees. He’d half-hoped she would morph in order to bring the ball back more easily, but of course, she didn’t.

“Good girl,” he praised softly as he took the ball from her mouth for the umpteenth time. “That’s enough fetch for one evening.”

Kira nodded. “Yes, sir. What would you like me to do instead?”

Her tone was formal, her expression carefully blank, as if she were ready to say ‘yes’ to anything.

It left him feeling sad and uninspired. She was drop dead gorgeous, especially in the pink camisole and silk stockings.

But he missed the real Kira.

As he deliberated, he noticed her subtly massaging her knees. She must have been tired and sore from crawling around.

After another moment’s consideration, he said, “Go get ready for bed. Shower, if you wish. There’s a towel and pyjamas on the vanity.”

Kira blinked, glancing down at her lingerie. “You want me to change into pyjamas?”

“Yes.” He hadn’t touched her, or himself for that matter. There was nothing in her emotionless expression to suggest that she wanted him to, and her blank apathy was another blow, confirming that she’d shut him out. He cleared his throat. “When you are ready, go to your mat and sleep.” When Kira hesitated, he added, “That will be all, pet.”

“Yes, sir,” she said, giving him a confused look before walking away, the lace of her panties riding up the perfect crack of her ass cheeks.

Nathaniel let out a long exhale.

Fuck me.

He’d never imagined it was possible to be this aroused and melancholy at the same time.

He remained at his desk long after Kira had curled up on the mat, and the hours passed as he stewed in his thoughts, watching the fire burn low.

Finally, he got into bed, which felt large and empty without her. Not even the soft hum of the magical candles could calm his racing heart. He wished he could connect to her mentally. He lay perfectly still, staring at the ceiling as he tried to detect the sound of her breathing, wondering if she was asleep. After what felt like hours, he assumed that she must be.

Until she spoke.

“Nathaniel?”

He drew a sharp breath, the sound of her voice in the darkness invading his heart and tempting him with hope. “Yes, pet?”

When she didn’t answer immediately, he sat up in his bed and leant over the edge.

Kira was staring up at him from the mat, her face cast in shadow except for the golden flecks caught by the candlelight.

She didn’t say anything. Neither did he.

A long minute passed as they held each other’s gaze, both of them unable to say in words what they wanted.

Finally, he beckoned.

Kira rose, slow and graceful, and climbed onto the bed.
