Kira leans toward the screen. “Bozhe moy.”

Alexei nods. “Zarya may be holding the stolen medicine until Chernov’s trucks collect it.”

I study the ambulance record leaving my hospital. “So they took medicine out in a real vehicle using false names.”

Kira opens another file. “They also used the ambulances to bring their injured men into the hospital and take them away before the police could question them.”

She shows me a report from one of the nurses.

“This nurse saw a gun under a patient’s blanket,” Kira says. “The patient was moved that night.”

I grip the table. “Where is the nurse now?”

Kira checks the staff list. “She quit the next morning.”

“What’s her name?” Alexei asks.

Kira turns her screen toward him. “Sofia Melnik.”

“Abramov will find her if she’s alive.”

No one argues with the word if.

Alexei closes the nurse’s file. “That’s enough for tonight.”

I look at Kira. “Thank you.”

“Don’t thank me yet.”

“If you find anything else, call me. I don’t care if it’s two in the morning.”

Alexei nods. “Give her the Volkov emergency number. It stays open all night.”

“I’ll send it now,” I say.

Kira nods. “Thank you. And if I find a name tied to Zarya, you’ll have it first.”

The screen goes dark.

Alexei keeps looking at the clinic records.

“We know how they moved the drugs and the wounded men,” he says. “Now we need names on one of these papers.”

Alexei walks beside me through the long corridor toward Maksim’s office. The estate changes as we go, with old carved doors and dark wood standing beside new cameras, steel locks, and lights hidden in the ceiling.

He pushes open the office door.

Maksim sits behind a wide walnut desk with a cup of coffee going cold near one hand. Smoke curls from a cigar in the ashtray, and a whiskey tumbler waits on the side table beside a stack of unopened files. Leonid is at the side table with several files open while Dmitri stands near the window.

Dmitri looks up. “Benedikt Sidorov’s son disappeared last night. My men are checking every address and route connected to him.”

“And the archive boxes?” Alexei asks.

“Still missing.”

Maksim closes the file in front of him. “The nine families have been moved. New cars, new phones, different routes. All of them reached safe houses.”

“Any trouble?” I ask.
