I grimaced, then gave him a brief run-down of him asking about Selena and trying to get me in his car.

His eyes darkened as I finished. “He tried to kidnap you.”

I shrugged. “Garrett had his deputy friend come over and take a report, but I doubt anything will come of it. Which was part of the reason I didn’t want to bother makin’ a police report about the break-in.”

He studied me for a moment. “Garrett’s at work?”

“Yeah. Until five. Unless he has to work later.”

“You’re stayin’ with me today.” Only he didn’t look very happy about his decision.

I wasn’t sure how happy I was about it either, but finding out the mustache guy ransacked my apartment had freaked me out.

“Come on,” Boone said, slipping an arm around the small of my back and ushering me to his truck, parked next to my car. “Let’s go get you that coffee.”

He opened the passenger door, and I got inside. Seconds later, he climbed in behind the wheel and started the engine. “Where can we get a decent cup of coffee to go?”

“We don’t have a Starbucks, so you’re out of luck there, but there’s a drive-thru coffee shop.”

“That’ll work,” he said, pulling out of the spot. “Tell me where to go.”

I gave him a pointed look, and he laughed. “To get to the coffee shop.”

“Turn right at the road.”

He did as I said, then asked, “Did you notice anything missing when you were in your bedroom?”

“That would be suggesting I have anything worth taking,” I said sarcastically.

“Everyone has something worth takin’.”

“Well, not me. No jewelry. The TV in the living room was given to me by one of my cousins, and you saw it was broken. I have a TV in my bedroom, but it’s old and crappy, and amazingly was still on my dresser.”

My mind started spiraling again. The mess was so overwhelming, and I wouldn’t be able to clean it straightaway, or replace what had been broken. Moving in with Garrett long term wasn’t an option. Which meant I might have to move in with Granny.

Boone slid a sideways glance at me. “What do you think they were after?”

The only thing that made sense was that they thought I had whatever Selena had taken from Tommy T. Had Tommy figured out who I was and come to search for it? But I’d faced Tommy the day after the mustache guy had tried to take me from the parking lot. Were they connected? Or were they two separate issues?

But I didn’t want to tell Boone about Selena’s theft from Tommy T. He was a cop, according to him, and I didn’t want to get her in trouble.

“You need to answer a few questions first,” I said, turning in my seat to face him. “You’re the one claiming there’s a connection between my cousin and your brother.”

“Okay, I’ll fill you in,” he said, then lifted his index finger from the steering wheel to point at the road. “But first, give me a clue about where I’ll be turnin’.”

“Just stay on this road and keep goin’ for a couple of miles. Rise-n-Shine’ll be on the right.” I crossed my arms over my chest. “How do you know my cousin is mixed up with bad people?”

“Because I think my brother’s with the same group.”

“You mentioned him yesterday.”

He nodded. “I tracked him here a few weeks ago, but so far I haven’t found anything.”

“How’d you track him here?”

His lips pressed together before he said, “A contact.”

“And what makes you think your brother is with my cousin?”
