I glanced over at Boone. “She mentioned Cody. He was at La Fuente last night.”

He remained silent.

“Selena knew Rebecca was in trouble, and she was trying to help,” I said, realizing it sounded pleading.

“Or… she could have been setting Rebecca up,” Boone said, his tone neutral.

I wanted to argue with him and something died in me when I couldn’t. “DV must be Dario Voss.”

“Agreed. What did he think she had? I find it hard to believe that Selena didn’t realize she left the flash drive at Rita’s.”

“It seems unlikely, but it’s possible. Selena can be kind of … scattered.”

Boone was quiet for a moment. “Do you think she’ll remember she left it with Rita?” He turned to me. “Do you think she’ll go to Rita’s lookin’ for it? Or worse, send Eddie or Voss?”

My heart leapt into my throat. “Don’t you think she would’ve gone there already?”

“Maybe, maybe not. It sounds like they’re gettin’ desperate. Desperate men do desperate things.”

I drew in a sharp breath. “Rita can’t stay there. Especially not with the baby. But what do I tell her to make her leave? The truth?”

“No, not the truth. We’ll think of something, but let’s open the other messages first.”

Next were Eddie’s messages. This time there was some back-and-forth. We read from the top down.

The most recent set of messages had started yesterday afternoon. Selena’s was first.

She’s not answering my texts and I swung by her house earlier. I don’t know where she is.

Eddie:

I’ll go by her house and look for it

I didn’t find it. Where do you think she hid it?

We don’t even know that she has it

DV doesn’t give a shit. She was the last person to see it and he needs it by Wednesday

“Miss Loretta, the neighbor,” I said, my voice breathy, “said Rebecca hadn’t been home for the past two nights. She must have been hiding from them.”
