My phone goes off again, and I’m ready to throw it out the window, but Mila puts her hand on mine, calming my irritated nerves in seconds. “Sounds important.”
“Not more important than you,” I tell her, glaring at the device.
“Answer it,” she nods and gives me a pointed look when I open my mouth to argue.
She has crossed some serious wires in my head. Her defiance and command are seriously turning me on.
I press the accept button, snarling into the phone, “What?”
“Grouchy this morning.” Ren mutters, “I figured you would want to know that the house has been under surveillance all night and into this morning. It’s almost eleven, and there is still no movement.”
I pinch the bridge of my nose, “Talk business later.”
I hang up on him, and Mila cocks her head to the side with curiosity, “What was that about?”
Mood officially gone. This is why I didn’t want to answer the phone.
“My men tracked the car that the gunman, who was also the driver, got away in,” I explain, and her eyes widen. She tries to sit up, but I hold her firmly against me. Keeping her breasts pressed to my chest.
“Mas! Why didn’t you start with that this morning?!”
“Because I prefer to watch you come undone underneath me.” I purr back, and she pushes my chest as blush crawls up her neck, “The man who shot at you was Dr. Mitch Alverez.”
Mila freezes. Her smile dropping from her face, and I desperately want to put it back.
“A-Alverez?” She stammers, all the colour draining from her face. I nod, keeping my eyes on her. Fear, anger, and remorse flash across her features in quick succession. Remorse because we had him in our clutches and let him go. Because my beautiful, good-hearted woman trusts the word of others and wants them all to be the hero in those books she reads.
Life isn’t a fairytale, and I am beginning to hate the people who are stripping each layer, hiding this ugly world from her.
“You and I are going to his house. He has a wife, but we will get her out of there, and we will end this.” I tell her, her numb features slowly thawing as she returns her gaze to me. Determination and fury burn deep in their pits.
“Let’s go then.”
A gentle breeze blows softly past us as we stand outside the unsuspecting house in the quiet neighbourhood. A man across the street cuts his lawn while a woman and her child giggle at a park. Everyone is none the wiser of the horrors that their friendly, neighbourhood doctor gets up to in the evenings.
My gaze returns to Mila. Her long flowing hair is still down, and her eyes are locked on the front door of the two-story home. She glares at it as if she can see the vile energy coating its pristine white walls.
“Ready?” I ask, and she nods.
With her hand in mine, we walk up the private driveway toward the estate. The plan is to act inconspicuously. If we are greeted by his wife, Ren and Raphael are ready to escort her away. She doesn’t need to be scared by what I plan to do, let alone the terror I know Mila is about to rain down against the monster who lives behind these four walls. We will get her out one way or another under the façade of needing to discuss the files we haven’t had a chance to review in private.
Ren and Raphael follow close behind us as we ascend the grand main entrance stairs to the deep oak double doors. I rap my knuckles against the wood with three loud booms. Heavy enough that, regardless of where they are in the house, they should hear us.
We wait.
When nobody comes to the door, Mila rings the doorbell.
We wait.
My eyes drift to Ren and Raphael, who both have their eyes narrowed in suspicion. We are on the same page.
“Maybe they aren’t home? We should check the hospital…” Mila looks up at me, trailing off when she sees my face.
“We have been surveying this house for the last twelve hours. Their cars are still in the garage. They haven’t left.” I tell her. The dots seem to connect quickly in her mind. She understands.
Turning to my men, I signal to the side of the house, “Head around back. Stay alert.”
I pull my gun from my waistband, turning back to Mila while grabbing the gun around my ankle. She is dressed in one of my black sweaters and her pants from yesterday, but she doesn’t have her Kevlar vest.
