“What?” I bark as I answer.
I should feel bad for answering the way I do, but I don’t.
“Hello to you too. We have a situation,” Evelyn snaps.
Quickly she fills me in, and when I hang up, I turn toward her brother.
“What is it?” he asks, dread seeping into his voice.
“There was an accident. Pinky’s been hurt.”
I give him the rundown and watch as he absorbs it.
“Do you want me to call in the others? Fill them in?” I ask.
He shakes his head. “No, not until we know more. Let’s roll out and grab his old lady before heading to the hospital. Once we know more, we can tell everyone else.”
“Lead the way.”
Evelyn
I slip into Pinky’s crowded room.
“Hey,” I say, walking over to my brother.
Reaper pulls me into a one-armed hug. “Sorry for not answering. We were in church,” he murmurs against my hair.
“All good.” I smile as I pull away.
I turn and face Pinky, who is being smothered by Sunny.
“You know to watch for jackasses. How could you be so reckless?” she demands.
Pinky sighs, jerking his face out of her hold. “I wasn’t being reckless, Sunny. You should know me better than that.”
“Sunny, would you mind stepping out for a moment? We need to talk to him, and Evelyn needs to check him over,” Reaper says.
Sunny turns and glares at my brother. “No, I’m not leaving him. Whatever he has to say, he can say it in front of me.”
“You know that’s not how it works, Sunny.” Pinky sighs.
“How about we run downstairs and grab some coffee? By the time we get back, they should be done with their questions,” I offer.
Reaper shakes his head. “No, you stay and check him over. Sunny, let’s go.”
He shoots Hades a look, and he nods before he steps out. We wait until Sunny’s complaining fades down the corridor.
I walk over to Pinky and start checking him over. “You gave us a scare. I swear my heart stopped when I saw your vest.”
Pinky winces. “Sorry about that. Trust me, this is the last place I want to be.”
“Well, when you came in, you were assigned to Travis, and I got the driver of the car.”
“Is he okay?” Hades snarls.
I nod. “Yeah, he’s not a big fan of bikers, though. Was complaining that you weren’t paying attention.”
Pinky scoffs. “Bullshit. I was driving like normal. Then that dickface came out of nowhere and into my lane. I had to dodge him when he cut me off. I swear to Christ he tried to run me off the road at least five times before he was successful.”
