He nods. “That we are.”

“I assume you want me to relive it all?” I ask.

He shakes his head. “I saw what happened. I don’t need you to relive it. What I need is for you to think of anything out of the ordinary. Anything that sticks out to you as odd.”

I think back to the day before. Did I find anything odd?

“Other than the bodyguard refusing to leave, then letting me walk away with her, nothing,” I admit.

“Could he have injected her with something before she came in?” he asks.

“It’s possible. I had them run drug tests. The results will show what she had in her system. She did seem out of it when she was in the room. I couldn’t tell if it was because of her injuries or if she was on something. She was beat nearly to death. I’m surprised she even had her eyes open.”

He nods, thinking over what I said. “You didn’t leave her alone?”

I shake my head. “No. Not once. I was with her from the moment I laid eyes on her.”

“I saw that. Could the guard have given her something in the room?”

I think it over.

“I don’t think so, but it’s possible. If he had something in his pocket, then he could have done something while we were talking about her.”

“Okay, that’s all I needed. If you think of anything, let me know. This wasn’t your fault, Evelyn. Dansworth sent her back in there on purpose. I think his plan was for her to die all along. I just can’t figure out why.”

I snort. “To cause me pain. I’m a bleeding heart. He knows we have been looking for that woman. He knew if she died under my care, I would be upset. Dr. Pembrooke likely told him how upset I was that she went missing. This is all a game to them.”

“It is,” Reaper admits. “One I am trying like hell to end.”

“I know. If that’s all, I’d like to go back home now.”

“Of course. Hades, can I have a moment with my sister?” Reaper asks.

Hades nods, kissing the back of my hand before he steps out, shutting the door behind him.

“So that’s a thing now, huh? You still okay with him?”

“I know I was vocal about not wanting him to shadow me at first, but he’s a good man,” I tell him. “I think I’m falling in love with him. Wow. That’s scary to say out loud. I don’t know what the future holds, but I hope he’s part of it.”

He smiles. “I never would have told you that you couldn’t date anyone, but I’m glad you chose him. We haven’t known him as long as some of the others, but he has shown up when it counts. He has proven that your safety is his priority. You deserve that.”

“I think he deserves some happiness too. He’s been alone a long time and beating himself up for something that he has long since paid his dues for.”

“I agree.” Reaper nods.

“I’m going to go home now.” I stand, moving to hug my brother.

He stands, pulling me into his arms. “Go, but you let me know when he decides to make you his old lady.”

I snort. “It’s cute that you think he has any say in it.”

He laughs. “I told him you’d be a handful.”

“He can handle it.” I wink before leaving him in the room.

“Everything okay?” Hades asks.

“It’s going to be.”
