“What?” Her smile didn’t falter. “You were saying something?”

He drew in a breath, eyes dropping to his plate. “I just… look, this isn’t easy.” He dragged a hand over his face. “I should’ve told you sooner. I just didn’t know how to say it.”

She didn’t speak.

He swallowed, forcing himself to meet her eyes. “I—”

“Here you go.” The waiter returned, setting the dessert between them.

A small candle burned at its center.

Ody’s gaze fixed on it. “What is this?”

She lit up. “Shame on you for forgetting!”

He looked up at her. “Forgetting what?”

“Today’s our two-and-a-half-year anniversary,” she said, grinning. “I thought we’d celebrate since you’re back.”

He didn’t move. His eyes dropped to the candle.

Her hand found his across the table. “Happy anniversary, baby. I can’t wait to spend many more years with you.”

His chest tightened.

“Come on,” she said, leaning closer. “Let’s blow it out together.”

His fingers closed more firmly around hers, breath catching in his throat.

She was already planning ahead.

He was trying to find the words to tell her it was over.

Chapter 30

Ody stilled. Then he leaned in and blew it out with her. “I’m gonna hit the bathroom,” he said, already pushing his chair back.

Inside the first stall, he pressed his back against the wall. His breathing turned sharp. Shallow. He tilted his head back, trying to steady himself. It didn’t work. The dizziness hit fast. His hands came up to his face, cold, numb. His legs almost gave out.

He stumbled out, gripping the sink, gasping. Water splashed over his face.

“Hey, you okay?”

He barely turned, giving a small, unconvincing nod.

“Come sit,” the man said, guiding him out to the small lounge area.

Ody couldn’t argue. He sat, focusing on his breathing. Slowly, it eased. “Thanks,” he muttered once he could stand again.

The man nodded and headed off.

Ody lingered for a moment, staring at his reflection. He ran a hand through his hair, and drew in a slow breath. Then he turned and went back.

“Everything okay?” she asked, casual.

“Yeah.” He sat down, taking a second before reaching for the spoon. “Can I try some?”

“Of course.”
