Chapter Forty-One

JETT

Jagger and McKinley walk in and I nod to them both.

“They let you stay here?” My best friend asks.

I grin, “Money talks, Jagger. Didn’t you know that?”

Rising from my chair, I go over to McKinley and pull her in for a hug. This girl looks like shit. It’s clear she didn’t sleep at all last night.

“She should be waking up soon according to the doctor.” I explain.

The nurse sits on a chair in the corner with her computer, watching over Mia. They are noting every small movement, even though she told me it’s probably involuntary. I stand back with Jagger, letting McKinley go talk to Mia for a few minutes.

“How is she doing?” I ask.

He shrugs, “Not good. The doctor called her last night and got the idea in her head that there could be brain damage.”

I roll my eyes, just like I did last night, “Fucking asshole. He said the same shit in front of Mia last night.”

My best friend tilts his head and looks at me like he’s trying to figure me out.

“You think she can hear things that clearly?”

I shrug my shoulders because fuck if I know.

“No, I don’t have a clue, but I’m not taking the risk of her thinking she’s better off dead.”

We wait for hours until the nurse finally jumps out of her chair and approaches Mia’s bedside with a flashlight. She shines it in Mia’s pretty blue eyes but Mia shuts her eyes tight.

“Hello, Ms Montgomery. No more flashlight, honey. Can you open your eyes?”

She complies, looking straight ahead, as if she doesn’t know the people in the room. Or does she even realize there are people in the room?

I move close enough to touch her hand, keeping my face in view.

“Angel.” My voice comes out thick with fear I’m trying desperately to hide.

Fucking nothing.

“What’s happening? Can she not talk?” I ask no one and everyone at the same time.

“The doctor will be here soon to explain, but sometimes this happens. It doesn’t mean anything is wrong. It could simply be a side effect from the medication.” The nurse explains, I think trying to make me feel better but it’s impossible. I’m not going to be calm until I know she’s going to be okay.

McKinley clutches onto Jagger as she sobs in his chest, and I can’t stop staring at my angel, completely fucking vacant. Her eyes are open, but it’s like she’s gone.

I’m trying really hard to keep my shit together. Throwing the nurse through the wall will not bring Mia back to me. Using will not bring her back either, but the thought is there in the back of my mind. I want to escape to a place that doesn’t involve the reality of possibly losing her.

The doctor comes in and starts barking.

“Why are there so many people in this room? This would overwhelm anyone. Everybody out except one person.”

He shines the light in her eyes, and she makes this sweet little growling sound that brings a smile to my face. It’s a sign of life at least.

McKinley glances over her shoulder and says, “You have twenty minutes, Rockstar.”
