Pulling off my top, I stand up and turn my back to him, covering my breasts with my hands.
He gently removes the clear bandage and studies it. “Beautiful. A bird suddenly free from its cage.”
There was a note to his voice I couldn’t place.
He fixes the bandage back and spins me around to face him. “When I said we needed some space, I didn’t mean that we both pretend the other doesn’t exist.”
“That’s the problem, Suit. You want me to be your wife when you feel like it. Your friend when you feel like it. And you want to ignore me when you feel like it. Relationships don’t work that way. Hell, even friendships don’t work that way.”
He lowers his lips to the side of my neck and presses a soft kiss there. “We both got thrown into this marriage, princess. I don’t know what the fuck I’m doing.”
He lifts his head and watches me with an odd expression. Is it longing? Or am I just being hopeful?
“I have a work event tonight. Will you be my date?” he asks, returning to kissing my neck.
Damn.
“Okay,” I agree. I think I’d agree to anything right now.
He smiles and then helps me put my top back on. “Good. There’s a dress for you waiting in my closet. Be ready by eight.”
Then he walks out, leaving me more confused than ever.
ELENA
When Suit ordered this dress for me is anyone’s guess, but it is stunning. Black silk, cinched in at the waist with a split that comes up to my thigh. Somehow, it flatters my body shape. There are also two boxes for me, one with new black heels and one with a Givenchy handbag. I usually didn’t like showing off my arms, but you know what? Fuck it. I am beautiful just the way I am. I’ve curled my hair, giving it more volume.
My pale green eyes pop with my brown smoky eye shadow, and my lips are a devil red. I spray a few dabs of perfume, then leave the bathroom. When I find the room empty, I head downstairs and find Suit at the bar, laughing at something Angel said. He’s wearing a black shirt, showing off a hint of his chest, slacks, and leather shoes. This is Suit, the hardworking lawyer, not the carefree biker. I’m excited for him to share this part of his life with me.
He glances up, his eyes widening when he sees me. “You look beautiful.”
“Thank you. You have good taste.” I grin, and he smiles wolfishly. He lifts my hand and presses a kiss to my knuckles.
“Elena, you look hot,” Lu calls out, and a few of the men whistle. I can feel my cheeks heating. I’m not used to compliments like that. I’ve been called smart before, but my family never raved about my looks. Katerina was always the pretty one in the family, and I was just in the background.
“Come on, let’s get out of here before I have to fight off some of my brothers.” He links his hand with mine and leads me out to his car.
“So what exactly is this event?” I ask as we pull out of the clubhouse.
“It’s an annual event where all the lawyers get together. They usually have a few key speakers. I make sure to make an appearance every year to network,” he explains.
“And they know you got married?” I ask, my gaze dropping to the ring on my finger.
“They will tonight.”
We arrive at a fancy hotel. Suit keeps his hand on my lower back, and it feels like we’re on a proper date. I don’t know why he brought me here tonight. I suppose being his wife on paper also means keeping up pretenses. He grabs me a glass of champagne from a passing server and hands it to me.
A few people come up to say hello, and he introduces me as his wife. I like the words coming from his mouth a little too much, but I know better now than to be hopeful, especially with his hot-and-cold act.
“Matteo, how nice to see you here tonight,” a tall, brunette woman purrs as she slides up to him. She looks like a model, and I know from the gleam in her eye that she either wants him or has had him already.
“Jessica.” He nods, then turns to me. “This is my wife, Elena. Elena, this is Jessica. She used to work at our firm.”
“Wife?” Her eyes flash with disappointment. “I didn’t know you got married. I always assumed you weren’t the settling-down type.” She turns to me with a cruel smile. “Nice to meet you. I suppose you could say I was his work wife.” She laughs, and I’ve never wanted to punch someone more in my life.
Another woman comes up to him. A curvier girl with dark skin and long hair. And then a redhead. They all fawn over him, and I down my champagne in one go.
It looks like Suit has a type, and that type is anyone with a pussy.
