Occasionally, she thought about Owen, who had been extradited to Louisiana and was serving twenty years with no chance of parole for more crimes than she could count. None having to do with her.

Every day, she thanked God for putting Sloane in her life. She didn’t want to consider what would have happened to her if she had married Owen. It gave her the chills just thinking about it, but it also reminded her of something her father often said—sometimes rejection can be protection.

In her case, no truer words were ever spoken.

Hearing a sound, Halayna glanced at the door and smiled when she saw Sloane leaning against the doorjamb with a bouquet of flowers in a crystal vase.

“My beautiful wife,” he said, pushing away from the door, and setting the flowers on the table next to the rocker. “And my little man.”

He placed a lingering kiss on Halayna’s lips, then lifted their son, and cradled him in his arms. To be such a big guy, Sloane was extremely gentle with their baby. He was also an incredible, hands-on father. Always there to jump in when needed and even when he wasn’t.

She stood and stretched her back. “Are you playing hooky this afternoon?” she asked, smiling up at him.

“Yup, want to join me? I’m thinking about spending the next five hours holding and staring at our boy here.”

She laughed. “If you keep doing that, you’re going to spoil him.”

“Yes, I am, just like I plan to keep spoiling his mother.”

Halayna grinned. He really did spoil her, and she had no complaints. Considering Sloane hadn’t thought much about marriage, he was the best husband ever. Between showing her the world, literally, and helping her with her business, she couldn’t have asked for a better mate.

When she was working on her fragrances, morning, noon and night, he was right there, assisting however she needed him. Whether it was helping her make business decisions, bringing her food on days she would’ve missed all her meals, or even going to bat for her with distributors, he was her biggest cheerleader.

And their hard work had paid off. Halayna had developed three custom scents, and her first fragrance, Miss Tanaka, hit the market three months ago. It was a dream come true, and it wouldn’t have happened without her amazing husband.

When he sat in the rocker with Kasai, she wrapped her arms around Sloane’s neck.

“Have I told you lately how much I love you?”

He looked at her and smiled. “You tell me every day, but I don’t get tired of hearing it. I love you too. I love you so much, and I was thinking that maybe we should start working on another baby.”

Halayna sputtered a laugh, then gave him a quick kiss. “Dream on Mr. Davidson. Check back with me in a couple of years, and I’ll think about it.”

He flashed his irresistible grin, and she could already feel herself weakening to his request. God, she loved this man. Who would’ve thought falling in love with her enemy would be the best thing she ever did?
