“No, that wasn’t my fault, I swear.”
Venom heard enough, and he slid his blade into the man’s throat. He didn’t look away. He wasn’t afraid of what he’d done. He wanted to look into the man’s eyes, so he knew exactly what had happened and why it was happening. He just stared at him.
“For fuck’s sake, Venom.”
“Did you want him roaming the streets? I know you’ve not acknowledged them, but technically, you have a granddaughter now. You want this piece of shit talking to her? Trying to get her into his trailer?”
“When you say shit like that, fuck, no, but did it have to be so messy?” Maverick asked.
“I thought I did it quite clean.”
“Is this why you called me?”
“No, I could clean this up, I’ve done it before. I wanted to know if he was a pervert.”
“And if he wasn’t, you were going to let him go?”
Venom shrugged. “We won’t know, will we? I killed him, and he’s no longer a problem.”
“I got a call,” Maverick said.
“About?”
“A fifteen-year-old girl is in the hospital. She was given the drugs,” Maverick said.
Venom gritted his teeth. “Shit.”
“It’s getting closer. I need to figure out where this shit is coming from.”
Venom nodded.
“Do you need any help with this, because I can put Bolt on it with you?”
“I’m good.”
“Damn it, Venom, I know you don’t like my son.”
“It’s not about liking your son. I have a process. You know this, and I will find where the shit is coming from, and I will shut it down.” Venom looked at Maverick. “There is a reason you put me on this. I get the job done, you know this.”
“But I don’t want you taking out every pervert in the meantime. Focus on this, okay? Romano doesn’t like the heat we’re going to be getting. I’ve already had the fucking sheriff sniffing around. When it’s kids, there is always a problem. You know that, and I know that. Get it fixed, and stop with this shit. Next time, call me, and leave this alone.”
Venom watched as Maverick left the factory, and he turned his attention back to the now dead pervert. Men like the one in front of him shouldn’t even fucking breathe the same air as people like Morwenna, or that young girl. It angered him that they were allowed to roam free.
For the rest of the afternoon, he had no choice but to deal with the cleanup. Maverick would be pissed if he left any traces behind, and he had a couple of guys who were more than interested in taking the body. The blood was easy to clean up. There were also some guys who wanted the truck.
It took a couple of hours, and it was dark by the time it was done. He decided to continue his mission tomorrow. The darkness didn’t bother him, but each night he returned home just in case Morwenna decided to make an appearance. He didn’t know what he’d done wrong. He wasn’t exactly an expert in women. He’d never needed to be.
Arriving back at his and Morwenna’s ranch, he parked his bike, saw several lights were already on and her car parked in the main driveway.
Venom climbed off his bike and made his way toward the front door. If she was home, what did that mean? He’d never been nervous about anything in his life. He wasn’t used to feeling this way. He ran fingers through his hair and pulled his key out, about to unlock the main door, only to stop as it suddenly opened, and there she was.
“Venom,” she said.
“Morwenna.” And he felt like a total idiot for just repeating her name for no reason.
“You’re here,” she said, with a laugh.
He looked behind her shoulder. “Can I come in?” He didn’t want to assume she was kicking him out, but there was a possibility.
