Reaching down, he caught the hem of her chemise. Gliding his fingertips over her calves, he slowly pushed the fabric up to bare her thighs. At the sight of her satiny skin, a shudder ripped through him.

He freed his manhood and then her fingers were on him, stroking him, driving him almost to the brink of rational thought. He pushed her garments higher. Desire burned so intensely, his hands shook. Kissing her, he settled over her and thrust into her.

Gasping, she arched against him.

“Did I hurt you?”

Her eyes tightly closed, she shook her head. “Move again.”

He rocked back and pushed forward once more, doing his best to go slowly, but she tilted her hips and took him deeper.

“Oh, Pitt—”

At the awe in her voice, a tremor rippled through him. His hunger sharpened. His strokes quickened. Eyes still shut, she matched his thrusts, again and again, until they both raced toward the same enticing burst of fire. Sweat beaded on his brow as he held back. He waited until she moaned and juddered beneath him before surrendering to his own blinding climax.

Panting, eyes closed, she lay flushed and motionless beneath him. Beautiful. He kissed her brow, her cheek, and her lips and then settled on his side next to her, his arm across her belly.

“Did I please you?”

Her eyelids opened a little. “Do you really wonder about my answer?”

Judging by her tone, he couldn’t have asked a more idiotic question. “I can guess,” he said, “but I would like to hear it from you.”

Her mouth formed a coy smile. “The truth?”

“Of course, the truth.”

“You pleased me very, very much.”

He chuckled.

“So much,” she murmured, caressing his face, “I would love for you to do it again.”

He yearned to stay and couple with her all night. “If I could, I would grant your wish—over and over, as many times as you liked.” After one last tender kiss, he sat up and righted his garments.

Disappointment tinged her gaze. She pushed up to sitting. “You are leaving?”

“I have to.” He’d already stayed far longer than was wise. Every moment he lingered in her chamber was another in which he might be discovered. “’Tis growing late, and I must get back.”

“Back? To where?”

He shook his head and buckled his weapons belt.

“You cannot go yet. There is still much I want to ask you.”

He fought the ache in his chest. He’d already told her more tonight than he should have done.

“Pitt, when will I see you again?”

The next time he entered the castle, he’d be leading the siege.

Guilt drove deep.

“I will not let you disappear from my life again.” Resolve gleamed in her eyes. Warning tingled in his mind, for she looked determined enough to call for the guards. He’d not be leaving if they detained him.

“Look, Blythe, I—”

Three brisk knocks sounded on the chamber door.
