Let it linger.
Let it speak.
To anyone watching—
It would be unmistakable.
They moved easily together, their quiet observations continuing beneath the surface. And with each step, Eliza became more aware of something she had not anticipated. They worked … well together.
Better than she had expected.
Better than she had ever experienced.
Was it merely shared purpose?
Or something more?
She did not know.
And that uncertainty unsettled her.
“I believe it is working,” Edwin murmured, pausing just long enough to press his hand over hers. “Every eye is on you.”
Her pulse quickened—but she forced herself to remain composed.
This was strategy.
This was control.
“If we have their attention,” she replied softly, “then we have already succeeded.”
She met his gaze—
Then broke it deliberately.
She had to.
“We should return,” he said.
“Yes,” she agreed. “Too much risks suspicion. We must leave them wanting more.”
“Exactly.”
At the carriage, he assisted her inside.
“Lady Eliza,” he said with a bow, “you are a most delightful partner in crime. I hope we remain allies—for I suspect you would be a formidable enemy.”
She laughed. “I am pleased to know I inspire caution.”
“You forget who my sister is,” he replied. “I have feared women all my life.”
She laughed again. “Then I shall take notes from Pere.”
“Please do not,” he said. “For all our sakes.” He paused, and for a moment his expression softened.
She could not tell whether it was real. Or practiced.
“I shall see you this evening,” he said.
