But he was patient, waiting until I was finally ready for him to move and then he did and everything around us melted away. I wrapped my arms around him, quietly moaning into his shoulder as my body began to unspool around his.
His breath in my ear came in faster and deeper, and I could feel his body trembling with the approach of his own release.
“You’re so beautiful,” he groaned out. “So perfect.”
I couldn’t say anything at all.
Just as I felt myself on the very edge of release, Sy stopped and gently lowered me down. I was about to protest when I saw the look in his eyes. He grabbed my hips, turning me around and facing me toward the storage room door.
“Hands on the door, baby,” he said, his tongue snaking out a bead of sweat on the back of my neck. I shivered, obeying the command and braced my palms against the cold metal.
The difference in angle forced me to press my head against the door and shut my eyes against the way he felt inside of me. He knew just how to twist his hips the right way, sending my vision swimming with every thrust. I whimpered, and Sy immediately wrapped a hand over my mouth, pulling my back just enough for me to arch against him. He didn’t break his rhythm, his mouth coming to my ear again.
“Please come for me, Lane,” he begged. “I need to feel you come for me.”
My body snapped, the coil of tension in my core unravelling as I screamed out against his palm. He pressed his forehead against the back of my neck, still rolling his hips into me until he came too, my name a quiet whine on his lips. I turned my head and he pressed his mouth to mine, low moans passing between us as my body squeezed around his.
Once we both managed to sort of recover, we laughed quietly in disbelief.
He brushed the tip of his nose against my cheek. “We should probably clean up.”
“How?” I asked incredulously, my mind still muddied from the explosive orgasms I just experienced at the command of the sweetest man alive.
He winked, kissing my cheek. “I know my way around here. Trust me, it’ll be discreet.”
“Because that’s been our vibe the entire time. Discreet,” I mumbled. Sy chuckled.

We leisurely made our way back to the Graystone, a happy, warm buzz around us that was quickly snuffed out once we actually entered the house. The atmosphere changed instantly, even before we met up with Bear and Dax in the basement. The two had started breaking through the concrete of the bathroom floor, leaving every surface coated with dust. The air itself tasted chalky and metallic, and jagged, heavy chunks of concrete were stacked to the side, exposing a layer of gravel and damp soil underneath.
“Well, you guys made a lot of progress,” said Sy, moving to place the bags of smaller accessories we’d gone to buy on the nearest available table. Bear looked up from where he and Dax were crouched over a spot in the middle of the rubble. When they looked up at us, I instantly felt the urge to run.
“I guess I can say the same for the two of you,” Bear said evenly, but his pointed look at me brought heat to my cheeks that was as guilty an admission as any. Dax’s gaze darted from Silas to me but he just looked down again.
“Sorry, Boss,” Sy said guiltily. The lines were already blurred about what he was actually apologizing for. “I know we might’ve overstayed our time at the store.”
“You did,” Bear replied, sounding almost disappointed. But then he pivoted back to Foreman Bear, waving both of us over. “But there are more important things to discuss right now. Dax found something.”
We walked over to join them and my mouth dropped at what I saw. There was a raw, two-foot crater in the gray concrete. At the bottom of the pit was a rusted, metal corner peeking out from the dark soil.
“What the hell is that?” I said.
“We don’t know,” Bear replied. “We didn’t want to open it until you got back.”
“Remember the issue with the subfloor I mentioned right in the beginning of the project?” asked Dax.
I nodded.
“We tore out that rotted wood platform Dax found,” continued Bear. “Underneath, the actual concrete slab was cracked wide open. Someone poured a patch job over a hole in the dirt, and Dax spotted the outline."
Dax didn't look up from the dirt. "It wasn't a bad patch job. It was a mask. Someone wanted this buried."
My mouth went dry but I refused to panic. There was no possible explanation for this that wasn’t at least slightly suspicious. “Can we bring it out?”
Dax nodded grimly and reached into the pit, cleared the rest of the soil with gloved hands and then yanked the object out.
The four of us all stared down at what looked like a heavy, vintage steel cash box, rusted shut and pitted from decades of ground moisture. I could feel all of their eyes on me, but mine were still locked on the box.
