“Cheers to being old and not as stupid as in our youth.”

Brock was funny. We touched our glasses together and settled into what I considered first date chit-chat. He told me about where he was from and I shared a few important details about my life.

Brock was interesting, clearly well-read. And it seemed everyone was fond of him. A few of the employees, stopped by just to say hi as we talked. He introduced me to a few of them.

I felt like I was finally making a connection.

“So, what are you doing here alone?”

“I originally booked this place for me and my boyfriend—”

“Oh, so you’re attached,” he said with disappointment written on his face.

“Ex-boyfriend,” I corrected. “At least now he’s my ex. When I booked this place, we were together and then I found out he had a wife and a kid.”

“What? Like an ex-wife?”

“No, like a current wife. I found out after I went to one of his shows. I was confronted with the truth after one of his performances.”

“His show? What was he an actor or something?”

“Or something. I’m not sure if what he was doing could be called acting.”

Brock frowned. “He wasn’t like a stripper or porn star or something, was he?”

“What? No,” I giggled. “What made you say that?”

“I don’t know. My mind’s in the gutter.”

“I didn’t think librarians talked about porn.”

“Are you kidding me? Most of my job is spent telling people to stop watching porn on the public computers in the library.”

“You’re kidding me? Young people are that bold nowadays?”

“Young people? Oh, the porn viewers aren’t teenagers usually. These are mostly men and women in their forties.”

“Yikes. Women too?”

“Equal opportunity porn.”

I laughed hard and he joined me.

He looked at his watch and said, “Listen, I know you can’t be away from your niece long, so why don’t we just exchange numbers now and catch up later on this week?”

“That sounds good,” I said.

He handed me his phone and I programmed my number in. As I handed his phone back to him, I caught him looking at my legs.

He gave me a boyish grin. “I was trying to be a gentleman, but those legs of yours are making it crazy difficult.”

His thigh was pressed against mine and I could feel the heat of his body. If Meredith wasn’t my roommate, I’m sure my night with Brock wouldn’t be coming to an end.

“I guess I’ll see you later,” I said, sliding reluctantly off the stool.

He caught my hand and said, “If I had it my way, this isn’t how this evening would end.”

My pulse quickened as he leaned towards me and kissed me. It was unexpected, but didn’t matter. I responded instantly by wrapping my arms around his neck, bringing him in closer until my breasts were pressed against his chest. And then just like that he abruptly pulled away.
