Chapter Eleven
Alex securedthe chains around Josh’s wrist and gave him one final check before exiting the Cylinder. Emily watched as Josh’s eyes widened with fear and rage. He continued to writhe and jerk in the chains trying to escape. The type of chains and the hand cuffs that Alex had produced from inside the Cylinder were a type of material that she had never seen before. The chains were tightly surrounded by a blue light that made a strange sound and flashed like lightning whenever Josh tried to break them. He continued to recoil from the shocks that he was receiving which was just serving to make him angrier. Emily felt bad for laughing, but the bastard deserved it.
Alex told her that he was taking Josh home to stand trial. The other soldiers who had betrayed him to help Josh were likely either on their way back to Zula or they were hiding out in the galaxy somewhere. When he got back he would put a hefty price on their heads for their return and hire some bounty hunters to track them down. They would be found. Two former soldiers were going to stick out like a sore thumb.
Alex took Emily’s hand and walked a few minutes with her in the bright San Diego sunshine. They had used the Cylinder that Josh had arrived in to transfer them instantly to the Cylinder that Alex had arrived in. It had been so insane to feel the effects of being swapped out and transmigrated that way. Emily remembered thinking that it was much faster, but not quite as much fun as their plane ride had been.
Emily was holding her breath, wondering what Alex was going to say. She wanted to stop him and talk first; she wanted to just tell him how much she loved him and wanted to be with him. She didn’t want him to go. She needed to be with him. It wasn’t right that he was about to fly across the galaxy away from her.
She wanted to tell him all of this, but she didn’t. She was hoping that he would say it first so that she didn’t have to. Even after all she had been through the past few days she was still having trouble expressing herself and just saying what she was feeling. It was so damn frustrating. When was it going to end?
Alex stopped in a clearing and looked up at the sun. It was so beautiful and bright. Emily knew he was thinking how perfect it felt after that brutal Russian cold weather they had dealt with.
“Emily, I have to tell you that the past few days that I’ve spent with you were better than any two days in my entire life. I came here for a mission and I ended up finding two missions. When I was taken back by my people after that first night I knew that I had to get back here. I wanted to believe it was mostly about the mission, but I knew a big part of it was because I wanted to be with you.”
Emily felt the tears welling up in her eyes. This time the shame and embarrassment did not come with them. She felt like she was being opened up and that the real her and her real feelings were being brought out on display. She wanted to run and hide as always, but she found that she had no problem telling that part of her to get lost. She was ready to be exposed and she was ready to tell Alex how she felt about everything.
“I could not explain it,” Alex went on. “I just knew that I had to find you again and I had to protect you. I had a feeling that you were going to be targeted and if there was any chance at all then I was going to make damn sure that didn’t happen. So I came back and since then life has been like an amazing rollercoaster of thrills, and I’m not just talking about all the times we were almost murdered. I mean all the times that I spent with you. All the talks we had and the time we spent. All the love we made. There has never been any time of my life where I was a fraction as happy as I’ve been with you.”
The tears were falling down Emily’s cheeks now and she could not stop them. She was on the verge of bawling as she listened to Alex’s sweet words and the true emotions and feelings behind them. She knew that he loved her and that he would always carry her in his heart.
“Emily, I am going away now. My people need a king and as much as I don’t want the job I can’t leave them in the hands of my brother. So I have to go back and lead them.”
“I know,” Emily said. “I understand you have to go.”
“Emily, will you come with me and be my queen?”
The question hung in the air for a few seconds. Emily could not believe she had heard those words coming out of his mouth. That was the last thing in the world she had ever expected to hear.
Somehow she was able to get the words out of her mouth “Yes! Of course I will!”
With that Alex swept her up in his arms and held her tightly.
And he never let her go.
