I smile.
“I resigned.”
Her expression changes.
“You quit your job?”
“Yes.”
“For me?”
“For myself.”
I touch her face.
“But mostly for you.”
“What are you going to do here?”
Sheriff Tate answers from across the bar.
“The county needs a new emergency-services director.”
I look at him.
“You said that position was filled.”
“It was. He resigned this morning.”
“Why?”
“He got tired of Parker complaining.”
From beside the photograph, Parker raises his crutch.
“I’ve been shot.”
Hampton isn’t here to answer him.
It feels strange.
Mara looks at me.
“You’re moving to Eagle River?”
“Yes.”
“Where will you live?”
Wolf places a key on the bar.
“Room seven is open.”
“The room above the tavern?” I ask.
“It worked for the rest of us.”
