I think of the man I knew in Afghanistan.
Unpredictable.
Dangerous.
Always working for someone and never telling us who.
Kane doesn’t get to walk away from what he did.
But maybe he finally gets to tell the whole truth.
“Can I speak to him?”
“Tomorrow,” Tate says. “After you rest.”
“I’ve rested.”
Mara looks at him.
“He has not.”
I stare at her.
“You’re supposed to be on my side.”
“I am. That’s why you’re going to bed.”
From the holding cell, Hampton says, “She’s good for you.”
Mara turns toward him.
“One more word and I’ll let Parker inside.”
Hampton sits down.
“I respect your relationship.”
Parker looks disappointed.
The Last Stand Tavern is closed that night.
The lights are on, but no customers sit at the bar.
Only Rangers.
Wolf.
Trigger.
Blaze.
Ace.
Havoc.
And me.
Mara sits beside me.
