She buries her face against my neck.

“You’re bleeding.”

“I’ve been told.”

“You said it was a graze.”

“It is.”

“A graze doesn’t require an ambulance.”

“That’s what I said.”

The paramedic gives me a look.

Mara pulls back far enough to see my face.

Then she kisses me.

Not gently.

Not carefully.

Not like she cares that half the Eagle River Rangers are watching.

I wrap one hand around the back of her neck and kiss her until the airfield, the bullet wound, and the last fifteen years disappear.

Someone whistles.

Trigger.

Of course.

Mara keeps kissing me.

I love her a little more for that.

When she finally pulls away, her forehead rests against mine.

“Harlan is in custody.”

“You told me.”

“His statements were recorded.”

“Good.”

“So were Vance’s.”

I close my eyes.

Vance admitted everything.

He admitted Harlan ordered seventeen men into the valley.

He admitted Captain Miller changed our extraction route.

He admitted shooting Grant.
