Page 316 of Rangers Last Promise

“Did he really pick the cell lock?”

Wolf looks at Hampton with new respect.

“He did.”

Tate points at him.

“Don’t encourage the prisoner.”

Harlan watches all of us.

Still calculating.

Still looking for a way out.

I step closer.

“Vance confessed.”

“I heard you.”

“You confessed too.”

“I admitted nothing.”

“You called those men compromised assets and liabilities. You knew why they were killed. You knew about Grant’s evidence. You knew the third envelope hadn’t been opened.”

His gaze drops to my body camera.

The red light is still blinking.

Everything recorded.

Everything preserved.

His silence says more than another confession could.

Wolf’s phone rings.

He answers.

“Yeah?”

His gaze moves to me.

“It’s Doc.”

My heart jumps.

“Is he all right?”

Wolf listens.

Then smiles.

“He’s refusing to get into the ambulance until someone tells him Mara is safe.”

I take the phone.
