My body camera records every one.
Hampton begins to laugh.
Harlan looks at him.
“What’s funny?”
“You.”
“Be careful.”
“You came here because you thought you could still control this.”
Harlan pushes the gun closer to the bars.
“I control whether you leave this cell alive.”
“No. You don’t.”
Hampton lifts his hands.
They aren’t cuffed.
A small metal key rests between his fingers.
Sheriff Tate stares at him.
“How did you get that?”
“I told you your walls are thin.”
“That doesn’t explain anything.”
“I’ve had a great deal of free time.”
Hampton moves fast.
He reaches through the bars, grabs Harlan’s gun hand, and slams it against the steel.
The weapon fires.
The bullet strikes the ceiling.
I run forward.
Harlan twists away from the cell.
Hampton keeps hold of his wrist.
Harlan drives an elbow through the bars and catches Hampton in the face.
Hampton loses his grip.
Harlan swings the weapon toward me.
I hit his arm before he can fire.
We crash into the wall.
